Marc Baylis on Rob doing a runner from Coronation Street

Proper soap villains need proper soap villain names and this one's no exception. No, not Rob Donovan, I'm talking about his mate Tiggsy. Yes, that's him above in the picture with Rob.

Actor Marc Baylis, who plays Rob Donovan in Coronation Street, is interviewed in this week's Inside Soap magazine. He reveals that Rob and Tracy go on the run, but will their escape plot be hampered by a little lady called Amy?

Rob tells Inside Soap: "It's do or die for Rob this time. Rob is doing things completely off the cuff. He wants to make the right decisions but we know how often he makes the wrong ones! There's a real sense of urgency too, and he keeps changing his mind. What Rob really wants is a happy ever after, because his upbringing meant he never had stability."

As Rob and Tracy flee the Street in next week's Corrie, they take Amy with them and do a runner to a country farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. Pictures of Amy and Tracy start to appear on the news and a hunt is on to find them, so the chance of Rob keeping his head low is out of the question, it would seem.

But Amy doesn't know what's going on, she's a fed-up teenager dragged away from No. 1 to a farmhouse with Tracy and Rob. And she sneaks off to a phone box to call Steve... what will her dad do with the information Amy gives him and what will Rob do when he finds out about Amy's call? All will be revealed in next week's show.

It's a shame they painted this character into a corner with the killing of Tina. He was great on the street and the only one who could keep Tracey in line. Now he'll never be able to return as anything other than a convict.
Maybe they could revive the show Porridge with Rob Donovan, Jim MacDonald and Nathan! LOL

Yes, that was a huge mistake. Since Tina fell while arguing with him the show could have gotten him wrongly convicted to write the character off. That would leave the door open to his return if a witness was found one day, having us see him clobber Tina was shortsighted.

I completely agree. Rob and Tracy are an amazing couple and could have been better than any other couple currently on the street beside Tim and Sally. Rob brings out the vulnerability in Tracy and makes her a better character. No other man has done that for her.
I miss Rob on the street and not one male actor since has come close to the calibre of acting as Marc Baylis. And he's yummy eye candy too.

Not sure about the eye candy in his current state, but a vast improvement on Aidan whose "charms" completely escape me.

I've already suggested this in my comment on the Monday 24 April episode review post. But there is a realistic scenario whereby his conviction is reduced from murder to manslaughter. His sentence could also be reduced (say to five years). Provided he's not charged with escape (there could be some sympathy for him if it's proved the accident was caused by people out to kill him) could he be out on parole sometime soon?

Maybe the actor Marc Baylis didn't want to return to Corrie full time?

I am willing to believe any story they give us, if it means Rob can come back. He is absolutely the only man for Tracy and he was great with Amy too. I too believe it was a wrong decision to make him the killer of Tina. The actor has said he loves Corrie, and is very excited to come back - I think I've read he said he would come back full time if asked. Please please please bring him back. Massive mistake letting him go!

Maricha said...

Perhaps, but his character didn't need to be sabotaged for him to be written out. If Baylis never wanted to return, Rob could have been recast.

And if he had been recast, people would've whinged that the new Rob isn't as good as the old one, bring back Marc Baylis, i prefer the original and so on, it always happens like that

Maricha said...

They might at first but if the new guy was as good an actor and just as cute they'd get over it.
For example, Tracy is a recast and I didn't hear anyone wanting Dawn Acton back even when Kate Ford took a break that lasted a couple of years.
And that's even though Acton made it clear she wanted to come back so I imagine that if Baylis was saying he wasn't interested in Corrie most would get used to the idea.

Err yes they would criticise. I agree with Anon 3.01. Ben Price has received constant criticism about being a lot older than the age of the original Nick. Not everyone is as accepting of change. Also Dawn Acton wasn't the best of actresses, that's why no one wanted her back. She makes a better DJ than an actress

Maricha said...

Well, that criticism about Ben Price's age is accurate. Though I like his acting, I have to admit that since he has to act with characters who have their age measured against his like Leanne and Gail, it can be a problem that he looks a decade older than he should.

My point was that Baylis isn't the only talented actor of his age and degree of attractiveness in GB. I wouldn't be surprised if there were even better ones.
Just like Ford replaced Acton, a talented actor could replace him if need be. Even as iconic a character as James Bond gets recast after a few movies.

It's Marc Baylis or no one for me. The chemistry between him and Kate Ford is magic. If Rob doesn't return permanently because MB is not keen, well that's that. But if it's only because his character has been done for murder, let's find a work around.

I think we will all (mostly) agree that it was a big mistake lumbering Marc Baylis with that storyline. But will the Powers That Be listen to the majority of fans? Will they 'eck as like!

Here here. I totally agree, people would forever be comparing the recast Rob either favourably or unfavourably with the original Rob. Leave well alone

Maricha said...

I can't think of a work around except to have the coroner's findings revised and now say that Tina's injuries from the fall would have killed her no matter what.
Just because she could still talk doesn't mean she wasn't doomed.

Maybe Marc Baylis was only happy to return for a short stint. Good actors can get work; look at Bradley Walsh, Sarah Lancashire, the list goes on. I, for one, wouldn't want Danny Baldwin back with another head. Tracy came back to Weatherfield as Kate Ford a long time after Dawn Acton left. People didn't take to her at first but she wasn't helped by awful storylines that even KF didn't like in the end. Marc Baylis has only been gone a short while so it was him or no-one for this central character. Too late now but, as he was killed off anyway, it should have been Tony that clobbered Tina after she fell.

Alternatively, if there is doubt whether the fall or the bashing killed her. Perhaps she had a weak heart that was the primary cause of death, with Rob's actions being contributing only. That would be enough to reduce from murder to manslaughter. The sentence could reduce accordingly.
