Coronation Street Blog editor's crime novel shortlisted for prestigious award

Hi everyone! I hate writing about myself in the third person so here I am, it is me, Glenda, your Coronation Street Blog editor.

As well as being a huge Coronation Street fan, I'm also a bestselling author of historical sagas, gritty dramatic reads set in 1919, starring some wonderful female leads. Find out about the books here.

And I also write cosy crimes set in modern-day Scarborough on the Yorkshire coast. Find out about those books here.

I'm delighted to say that my cosy crimes have been shortlisted in the prestigious Dead Good Reads awards 2022.  I'm in the category of New Kid on the Block Award for Best New Series. This award is for a first-class series with no more than three instalments on the shelves.

I'm up against bestsellers Richard Osman and Val McDermid and so I need every single vote you can give.

Vote here

Thank you!

Coronation Street Episode Review; Wednesday 29th of June at 8 pm

Peter has pulled no punches in his medical negligence case against Dr Thorne. That thorn in Barlow’s side certainly needed taking out, Tonight, Peter is awaiting the case results from the GMC and their investigation of the posh betting doctor. It's David V Goliath-type battle, and the odds seem to be against him. Working-class man versus upper-class twit. I had hopes up that Peter would win but without that dictaphone evidence, the case falls flat and Thorn gets away with a slapped wrist, remaining a prick on Peter’s side. Vengeful and angry, Peter cools off at the rovers when Dr Thorne visits him, antagonises him about his alcoholism, and pushes all of the wrong buttons.

Peter plays right into his hands, and after confronting the doctor in his car, he takes a 3-iron to the car exterior and attacks Thorne. Adam arrives and mitigates matters - but it would have been better if Peter hadn't played up to the posh doctor. The social injustice rankles him - I wonder where all this will lead?

Maria’s rubbish time with the council continues tonight too. Even though she has this trolling/viral rap video/death threats /deepfake porn lying over her head, she still sees fit to head up a press conference to confront the striking refuse collectors. In the packed-out meeting, Maria is heckled and henpecked by the baying crowd, prompting her husband to revert to his own style of crowd management, by taking a pop at the refuse team leader, Jimmy. Gary is taken down to the police station, causing more trouble for councillor Connor, leaving Maria to conclude that she should just quit the council altogether. Gary, who isn't charged by the police, tells her she should continue, regardless of adversity. Sally is told the news and offers Maria some words of political advice and guidance. Maria decides to stay within the role, remove herself from social media, and concentrate on Liam's birthday party. Later, and in private, Maria continues to scroll, the vitriol remains in full flow, and she seems stressed by the online abuse.

Toyah rejoins real life and heads back to Underworld, ready to repay Leanne and the flat rent. The factory girls, bosses, and clientele aren't that forgiving. Jo Lafoe (best Corrie name ever) tells Sarah she should reconsider Toyah’s position, who's subsequently fired and returns to the flat.

Meanwhile -George investigates Frank, proving fruitful when he overhears him making a threatening phone call. Sean reels from the revelation and ends the relationship. Later, Frank explains to George that he has misconstrued the phone completely, and Sean reconciles with his fella.

Elsewhere tonight - Pre-wedding nerves go into overdrive for Fiz as Mimi's arrival is imminent, Hope plays up, and she has wedding veil damage to deal with. Phill arrives to offer advice and support.

PS - Redpilled100 sounds like the name of a viagra pill! It can't be Tim doing the trolling?

Preview of tonight's Coronation Street - Wednesday 29 June 2022

Wednesday 29th June 2022

GARY TAKES MATTERS INTO HIS OWN HANDS Maria reckons the police need informing about the threats she’s receiving. Despite Gary’s misgivings, Maria refuses to hide away and hosts a press conference. As she’s heckled by Jimmy, the refuse team leader, Gary decides that he’s behind the online alias making threats and aggressively pins him against the wall. Maria decides that being on the council isn’t worth all the strife it’s putting their family through. Sally’s shocked to hear that Maria’s withdrawing from local politics and, explaining that she’s been in her position, implores her not to be beaten in her quest to make a difference. Will Maria be swayed?

PETER IS DISILLUSIONED BY HIS ORDEAL WITH THORNE As they await the verdict on Thorne from the GMC, Carla urges Peter to be grateful for his health and focus on their future. Thorne meets Peter in the pub and orders him not to undo all his skilled work and embrace the second chance he has to live. As Thorne gets into his car Peter can no longer contain his rage and angrily confronts him.

TOYAH TRIES TO STAND ON HER OWN TWO FEET Telling Leanne she intends to repay her the money for her legal bills, Toyah returns to work at Underworld. But with Toyah snapping at customers on the phone, Jo Lafoe warns Sarah that employing someone charged with murder isn’t a good look.

FRANK SHOWS SEAN HIS TRUE COLOURS When George overhears Frank threatening someone over the phone, he makes a decision and finally explains to Sean how Frank made his school days a misery by humiliating him at every turn. Despite Frank’s insistence that he’s changed, Sean finishes with him.

ELSEWHERE Fiz gets worked up ahead of a pre-wedding visit from Mimi as Hope kicks off about her bridesmaid dress and Fiz worries her veil is frayed. As Fiz asserts that everything needs to be perfect, Hope earwigs from the hallway.

Fiz and Phill’s Wedding Day Chaos? Corrie Blog chats to Jennie McAlpine

A summer wedding is always something to look forward to, isn't it? In recent Covid years, we Corrie viewers have been starved of any big cast ensemble event, so it's with some excitement that I look forward to Phill & Fiz's big day. Fiz however, has some hesitations and hurdles to cross before then!!

Beset with DIY disasters at their posh new house, Fiz's pre-wedding jitters go into overdrive as she faces up to more Phill-sized problems! Firstly, matriarchal Mimi returns to cause more trouble, and then Phill's beautifully posh ex-wife Camilla arrives on the scene! Could she be a catalyst that stops the big day from happening? That could also be said of Tyrone though, who is encouraged by Kevin to tell Fiz his true feelings. Meanwhile, Cerebus causes Evelyn and Mimi to clash. Will the ceremony even go ahead? As I write this, I'm reminded of Eva and Aidan's big day, so let's hope that's not an ominous thought!

With all of that in mind, I was ecstatic to be invited to an ITV Corrie press day to chat with Jennie McAlpine, who plays Fiz, to learn more about it!

Hi Jennie, great to speak to you again. How does Fiz feel as the wedding day approaches?

Fiz is sure that this is the right thing for her and that this is what is right. If Tyrone hadn't cheated, things would have been different, but of course, Phill is a lot better for her and is the antithesis of Ty. Fiz has no more doubts now.

Mimi makes a return for the wedding. She caused a bit of trouble the last time she was on the street. How are things between her and Fiz now?

Well, she wasn't nice the last time she was on the street, was she? Phill finally stood up to her and sent her on her way. Fiz is dreading her arrival, and thinks it's will be the same as last time. If you remember, it was the planning of Phill’s birthday, which she took over, but the wedding's a million times bigger! She (Mimi) is out to cause chaos and sabotage the wedding.

Does Fiz think that Mimi will put a stop to the wedding?

Yes, I think she does - Evelyn certainly does. It doesn't surprise Fiz that Mimi may try and scupper the wedding. It doesn't go well.

Phill’s ex-wife Camilla also arrives! Does this unsettle Fiz? Does she worry that there could still be feelings between Phill and his ex?

Yes. Deep down she’s still quite fragile since Tyrone did that to her. There is an element of disbelief with everything she’s had from Phill, and then his successful ex-wife turns up! She (Fiz) thinks that Phill is going to go back to Camilla and that Fiz will be left on her own. Fiz is low on self-esteem as it is.

To add to the mix, the registrar is cancelled on the morning of the wedding! Does Fiz feel that her big day is doomed?

Yes, and I think Fiz says exactly that to Evelyn, whilst in the pub! That was one of my lines. I do. I think she thinks it is: that’s a part of how she thinks about herself. It’s as though she thinks she doesn’t deserve the big house and the posh wedding, and that she should have just stuck with the cheating Tyrone, in the first place.

Whilst she’s feeling vulnerable, Tyrone tells her he still loves her and on the morning of the wedding itself! How does she react? Does this change anything for her?

No, it doesn't. She just tells him what we've already said before. Had he not cheated on her with Alina, things may have been different. It's not a total shock that Tyrone wants them to get back together - the timing is lousy. However, she still wants to marry Phill and goes ahead with marrying Phill. She takes little notice and carries on with it regardless. Tyrone also gives Fiz a pair of Vera’s beautiful pearl earrings! It's a nice nod to corrie's past, and something else to add to Fiz’s emotional wedding morning.

Thanks, Jenny - looking forward to watching the wedding!

Coronation Street isn't giving anything away here so we will have to watch and find out if Fiz marries Phill at all? The lead-up to this has included a lot of comedy; Phill and Ty’s fights, staunch matriarchs in the form of Evelyn and Mimi, trouble from Hope, and a tug-of-war for Fiz’s affections. I predict a culmination of all of these factors for the Wedding day episode?

I shan't be showering the confetti about, just yet!

Phill and Fiz’s wedding (episode 10685) is due to broadcast on Friday 8th of July 2022 at 8 pm, so make sure you're watching
