I have to disagree about Phelan having many layers to his character. That's my main criticism: he's very 1 or, at best, 2 dimensional. We still don't know what drives his egomania and, even if the argument goes that some people are just like that, it's boring to watch.

Connor does play Phelan as if there's more to him than is written but that's down to his talent. Sometimes Phelan is like a mindless killing machine, others you can see his grim humor or cynical view of the residents.
With another, lesser actor the character would just be evil personified. Still, I agree with Humpty Dumpty that since, in the end, all he does is be evil, Phelan really should have been done a while ago.

I like the actor enough that I don't see why the soap tradition of having an actor return as a twin of their former character with a completely different personality can't be used to keep him. Connor is an asset to the show but Phelan isn't.
