Nick and Leanne, Steve and Michelle, Peter and Toyah - Couples under the Microscope

Under scrutiny are 3 couples - , Nick and Leanne, Steve and Michelle, and Toyah and Peter.

Leanne and Nick have been together on and off throughout their adult lives. Should they now realise that they don't really work or should they make a major effort for the sake of the new baby and for Simon, to stay together? Well, try as they might, it seems increasingly improbable that they will not see it through. Only this week, Nick's antagonism and volatility to anything to do with Steve, showed itself again in one of this week's episode

As Liz is Steve's mother and the biological grandmother of Leanne's baby, Nick cannot accept the gift of a Moses basket, which Leanne had graciously accepted, in the full knowledge that this is the day when Steve and Michelle attend their baby's funeral. Demonstrating her emotional intelligence, a thawing towards Liz has occurred in Leanne, in the acceptance of the Moses basket. Nick, by contrast demands that it be removed and not just because he has bought one too, but because he is churlish and ungrateful and because Liz happens to be Steve's mother. As far as I know, Liz has never done anything to hurt Nick and yet he is inexcusably rude to her. That she must be suffering and grieving seems to be an irrelevance to Nick. His selfishness and thoughtlessness get in the way of common decency.

Nick has a further difficulty - Peter. Despite Leanne's reassurances, Nick is jealous of Peter. Viewers will remember that in an unguarded moment Steve confessed to Peter that he was the father of Leanne's baby. It seems unlikely that Peter will not use that knowledge to his own advantage when the moment should arise.

Leanne and Nick's relationship cannot stand the strain. Affected by Liz's loss, it may be that after all Liz may have a role in Leanne's baby's life. That said, Nick may be more than unhappy about that and put a stop to it.

Though temporarily reconciled after their baby's funeral, the future looks less than secure for Steve and Michelle. Inevitably, it will be revealed that Steve is the father of Leanne's baby and in her fragile state, Michelle will be devastated. And what of Robert? So far, having told Michelle that he has feelings for her, might she not take solace in him? She will no doubt discover too that all along Liz knew that Steve was the father of Leanne's baby. It is perfectly understandable that Liz did not reveal what she knew to Michelle. Whether Michelle will see it this way is more than doubtful.

And, may I ask - where is Ryan?

From the beginning, I have struggled to understand why Toyah and Peter can't tell Leanne that they are an item until her baby has been born. My own belief is that Leanne won't really care that much except for an anxiety over Peter's ability to remain faithful.

I wanted to be convinced but Peter and Toyah just don't work for me and that is aside from the coincidence of their ever meeting and then the further step of them deciding to begin a relationship, despite Leanne's past with Peter and the fact that she is bringing up his son.

And what about husband Toby? Toyah has no children and her biological clock is ticking. This may not concern her but then again, if it does, and she may have her maternal feelings stirred up by the arrival of Leanne's baby, it seems unlikely that Peter will be keen for another child.

It was unseemly of  Toyah to allow Simon to take the blame for the cigarettes that Peter had left at Leanne's flat. Has she no moral fibre? What decent adult  allows a child to take the rap for something for which they themselves are wholly responsible?

Maybe it's an obvious conclusion, but, with the best will in the world, it won't last.

When the truth comes out about Leanne carrying Steve's baby,I hope it's remembered that when Steve and Leanne had their drunken one night stand,he truly believed his marriage to Michelle [who was leaving to sing on a cruise]was over due to her fling with her childhood sweetheart Will which I may add Liz also know but kept quiet about.

We've just learnt that Ben Price is leaving so that must signal the end of his and Leanne's relationship. Why do they leak these things so early? It's hard to invest in a romantic match if you already know one party will be off sometime this year. As for the business about the cigarettes, absolutely crazy. Peter could have visited to see Simon and, anyway, surely they're the brand that Peter always smokes. Smokers are generally loyal to their fags and Leanne would instantly know they were his. When the baby storm erupts and Steve and Michelle split, realistically, Michelle should want to be away from the Street. She'd be off to see Carla at least for a while. I hope she doesn't drop straight into Robert's arms.

Unfortunately it has already been decided - Ben Price is leaving the show, ergo Steve/Michelle divorce - Michelle/Robert become an item - Leanne/Nick separate then Leanne/Peter or Leanne/Steve?? Anybody's guess.
PS Humpty Dumpty you may want to reconsider your avatar name - there is a terrible ad showing in America right now about poor Humpty Dumpty falling off the wall while doing his income taxes - when he is in the hospital being stitched up?? or should I say "glued together" - he is asked why he was doing his taxes on the wall, the reply was "because he could" - needless to say poor Humpty Dumpty doesn't fare too well in this commercial.

Anon 21:48 - the fact that Steve and Michelle were "on a break" and Steve thought Michelle had left him, will be conveniently forgotten in order to make Steve's indiscretion more of a betrayal and to justify Michelle divorcing him. I still don't understand why Leanne slept with Steve when she's barely spoken to him in her 20-ish years in the Street.

I agree with Humpty Dumpty that it makes much more sense for Michelle to stay with her parents or Carla, rather than turn to Robert. Surely she wouldn't want to be around for the birth of Leanne's healthy baby?

I fear for Michelle when the truth about Leanne's is revealed. The fact that everyone on the Street who cares about her, apart from Amy, were in on the secret will be seen by her as the most massive betrayal. I'm not sure whether she will get through it unscarred.
True, Robert is waiting in the wings, but I agree with Humpty Dumpty that she will want to get away.
As far is Toyah is concerned, is it remotely possible that subconsciously she is having an affair to try and get pregnant?.
After all no-one appears to use contraception, and they seem the most fertile bunch on the planet! Perhaps she thinks her chance of conceiving is better there than anywhere else.

Alcohol maybe?

Leanne was seen idly chatting to Steve in the days before the deed was done. A sure sign, so that when Michelle apparently left Steve, he turned to a friendly shoulder, they talked, they drank and reached out to one another. Leanne had also been churned up over Nick so she was looking for comfort as well. I also thought it was odd since, as someone said, they've barely really spoken in the 20 years they've known each other.

IMO the characters of Leanne and Peter belong together. Unless there's a bombshell coming back in the form of Carla Connor.

I too have always thought that Leanne and Peter belong together. Regarding Toyah, I was really looking forward to her reappearance, but am disappointed with everything about her so far. There is no chemistry between her and Peter. I am guessing it is something about the actress because Chris Gascoigne has always had chemistry with every other female he has been involved with.

It's definitely the actress Chris G. has great chemistry with everyone he acts with except her. She seems as though she has no energy at all. Her quarrels with Eva also fell flat because of it.Perhaps things will pick up once Toyah can be honest with Leanne and she's seen in a better light.
