Coronation Street barmaid becomes University Chancellor
Leeds Trinity University welcomed its new Chancellor, Coronation Street's ex-barmaid Angie Freeman, best known as playwright and actor Deborah McAndrew.
During her visit to the University this week, Debbie met staff, students and representatives from Leeds Trinity Students’ Union; took part in a live question and answer session on Facebook; and was interviewed by Journalism students.
“It’s a great honour and a very personal pleasure to be invited to be Chancellor of Leeds Trinity University. I was educated through the Catholic schools of Leeds and I have remained close to my roots. Higher education should be a gateway through which young people pass into fulfilled and productive lives,” Debbie said.
“Leeds Trinity University’s vision to nurture individuals to be not merely employable but socially impactful chimes perfectly with my own values, and I am very proud to be Chancellor of such a vibrant and pioneering institution.”
Ms McAndrew will return to Leeds Trinity for her official installation as Chancellor on Friday 15th June.

One of my all-time Corrie favourites. She had both drive and an education. I sure wish that some of the youngsters on Corrie today would have the same. Both Sophie and Chesney excelled during their early school days. What happened?
I agree. Maybe the Corrie storylines should take heed of her words.
Indeed to both comments above! Maybe then we wouldn't need the police station, and probably much less of the swinging doors to the hospital rooms. Of course it would take quite a bit of creativity to make some school/university storylines good, but hey, it's real life too isn't it?
