The big story this week was the funeral of Lewis Archer after he popped his clogs in Audrey’s bedroom last week. Audrey finds out about his funeral by chance, it’s clear she hasn’t been invited. Claudia “and the girls” have paid for and arranged it and Audrey turns up late with Gail and Nick in tow. The crematorium is full of, well, let’s call them ‘women of a certain age’ who are all there to mourn the passing of ex-escort Lewis. Audrey calls the funeral’s a farce, she’s accuses Claudia of being in cahoots with Lewis and nicking the eighty thousand pounds that Archie Shuttleworth left Audrey in his will. But it’s not Claudia, or Lewis, who has stolen Audrey’s cash. It’s Audrey’s grandson Nick who has nicked it and he carries it around in a gym back all week. He pays thirty thousand pounds of it into the Underworld account and gives his soon-to-be-ex-wife Elsa a cheque for that amount by way of paying her off for nicking her money that he used to buy his away into Underworld. Confused? You will be.
Audrey sheds a tear, sitting on Maxine’s bench, about losing Lewis and losing her cash. Nick is the one she confides in and though he’s as guilty as sin he doesn’t flinch. And in a wonderful touch, Lewis’s coffin rolls into the flames to the tune of Abba’s ‘The Winner Takes It All’ (as sung by the wonderful Jane McDonald, of course). This was just one of many comic touches during Lewis’ funeral in the double episode written by Jonathan Harvey.
Elsewhere, Liz is released from hospital and is determined to get her revenge on Johnny for running her over. But it’s Jenny who apologises to Liz and in doing so, Liz realises that Jenny was the one driving and that Johnny’s covered for her. It’s something that Jenny can’t deny and Liz calls the cops and gets them both arrested. Johnny faces a charge of perverting the course of justice and Jenny for grievous bodily harm.
Meanwhile, in the hunt to bring devious Duncan down for Sally’s wrongful arrest, Imran calls Duncan to his office. While Duncan’s there, Gina goes to Duncan’s house trying to find any dirt she can dig up to frame him. She follows Duncan to a payphone and finds he’s been calling Costa Rica. Not only that – he’s speaking to his wife, the wife he told everyone had died. Gina tells Tim and he and Sophie concoct a plan to get Duncan’s daughter Olivia to Speed Daal on the pretence that they’re hiring her as a model for a photo-shoot. Olivia suspects something’s up when the photographer doesn’t arrive and Tim and Sophie ask her questions about her ‘dead’ mam. Olivia rings her dad and Duncan storms in, arguing with Tim. Tim’s a man possessed, he won’t let Duncan go and follows him home. They argue, Duncan runs away but Tim catches him. “I’m untouchable!” Duncan snarls ... before being hit by a truck. It was a wonderful, fun scene in the way that Corrie does well, but I’ve seen the preview pictures for next week’s Corrie and am sad to tell you that not even a truck can demolish Duncan. He lives. For now, at least.
Angie and George left Weatherfield this week to return to South Africa. Yay, etc. This leaves Mary on her own again, but let’s hope Norris won’t be away much longer and she’ll have someone to fuss over again.
Sarah and Gary are skint, so much so that they have to move out of their flat in Victoria Court and back in with Gail, David, Shona, Max and Lily. Bethany can’t take moving back in with her family and goes to live in the flat above the salon with Maria and Emma. I like the sound of these three living together and it could lead to some fun.
Gemma’s brother Paul makes a move on Billy this week. Billy’s all coy and flirty, he’s clearly enjoying himself and the two of them snog on the Street. But then Paul plays loose and free with Billy’s heart and cheats on him before they’ve even begun, with a lad he’s met online.
Brian – or as he likes to call himself – B-Pac, is looking for work. He gets knocked back by Freshco and so Cathy finds him a job in the Kabin. Rita complains she can’t manage on her own any more, she’s finding it hard. In comes B-Pac who helps himself to all the sweets and gets on Rita’s nerves. It’s a match made in comedy heaven.
And that’s just about that for this week.
