Yasmeen and Geoff return from a Las Vegas holiday, married. It’s a shocker all round, not least for Tim when he finds out that a Las Vegas wedding is legal. This has been a great storyline, and my highlight of the week. Tim’s reeling as he remembers marrying a woman in Vegas on a drunken holiday years ago. He thought it wasn’t real and didn’t count and when Steve and Kev point out that Tim’s a bigamist, he sets out to do the right thing. He tracks down the woman he wed. She’s working in a bar in town and he asks her for a divorce. Then he proposes to Sally all over again. She hasn’t got a clue what’s gone on and accepts Tim’s proposal, calling him an old romantic. Little does Sally know that Tim’s already got a secret wife.

Robert’s got the cops on him this week as they search for missing Vicky. They find a bloodstained piece of china vase in Vicky’s house and another in Robert’s van. It’s not looking good for Robert, but has he done away with her? I reckon Vicky’s behind this, hiding away and making sure Robert gets the blame.

Rita’s all alone in the run-up to Christmas. Jenny’s too busy in the Rovers to talk to her. Gemma and Chesney are trying – and failing – to cope with the quads as they come home from hospital and have no time for Rita. Then Norris calls by and he and Rita reminisce over a pot of tea in her flat and then he leaves and she’s on her own again. All the while, the camera sort of slow-pans away from Rita leaving her looking miserable in a cardi. They might as well have had a flashing sign over Rita’s head that says LONELY OLD WOMAN AT CHRISTMAS SHOCK STORYLINE for it was just about as subtle as that.

Ken, Adam and Peter take it on themselves to help Daniel as he struggles to cope with baby Bertie on his own after Sinead’s death. Daniel locks himself in his flat and watches re-runs of Sinead’s videos which does him no good at all. It’s also a bit dull for the viewer, let’s face it. Anyway, when the Barlow men get Daniel outdoors, he gets drunk in the Bistro then run over by Cathy’s car on the cobbles. He’s fine and suffers just a few scratches and then chats Bethany up on the Street.

Elsewhere this week, Maria’s pregnant with Gary’s child. Ali is jealous when he hears the news and warns Maria that Gary’s a loan shark but Maria won’t believe any of it.

Big Garth’s winter wonderland is more grotty than grotto when Santa gets drunk and the Elves start passing a joint around. I’m not really sure what the point of all this was apart from Michael Bailey to wax lyrical about how good it could be if he had the money to invest in it and how much his daughter Tianna and ex-girlfriend Grace – who nobody knew about until a week ago – would love it.

And that’s just about that for this week.

Coronation Street weekly update – November 30 2019

I love it when Coronation Street and ITV keep a spoiler to themselves. No secrets leaked to the press. No teasers given to the soap sites. Just a shock unfolding on screen in front of fans. This week was one of those weeks. Jade the nanny at Fiz and Tyrone’s house turns out to be John Stape’s daughter, therefore half-sister to Hope.  We find this out when she goes to lay some flowers at John’s grave but not before she causes mayhem at Fiz and Tyrone’s house first. There’s a fire in the backyard and Hope gets the blame – but it’s all Jade’s doing. Jade encourages Hope to act up in front of Fiz and causes all kinds of problems for the family. But when a letter arrives from Bessie Street School to say Hope can return, there’s no need for Jade to stay. She leaves Hope alone on the sofa as she creeps out into the night, but gives Hope a phone and tells her it’s their secret. So although Jade has gone, the secret sisters have their secret phones. I wonder if this means she’ll be back?

In other news this week was a heartbreaking scene with Paul facing up to the abuse he’d received as a young boy from his mam’s fella, Kel. The storyline redeems the horrible Bernie of course, when she shows how protective she is towards Paul and Gemma too. With Billy’s help and support, Paul agrees to see a counsellor and the next step is to make a statement to the police. Will Paul be strong enough to see it all the way through?

Elsewhere, Roy visits his brother as often as he can. Richard is dying and has a carer coming to visit him. Roy is appalled that the carer spends so little time with Richard (has Roy not seen the Ken Loach film ‘Sorry We Missed You’ yet?) and Roy complains to social services. Nina’s angry at Roy for getting involved as social services say they’ll come out to do a review, which Nina is concerned might mean they’ll be even worse off than they were before.

Over at Underworld, Sally waxes lyrical about pants after the workers demand a slide and a Google-type play zone in the factory. I’m not really sure what’s going on to be honest at the factory. Nick seems to be in a strop, Sarah wants to be in charge meanwhile Gary seems to hold something of the balance of power and I’m really not sure what it is any more.

Likewise with the Michelle and Robert story, I gave up on that long ago. Michelle tells Carla she wants the wedding to go ahead so she can take Robert for everything he’s got. If anything else happened in this story this week, please let me know. I deliberately record Corrie these days just so I can fast forward through every single one of these scenes.

And finally this week, at Roy’s Rolls Mary puts up fairy lights and tinsel much to Roy’s disdain. It’s too early, he says (it is) and it’s a health and safety risk in the café (he’s right) but still she marches on. There’s a light-up reindeer installed on the wall outside of the café but when the lights fizzle out and Adam walks by there’s a glorious line from Mary.  “I wouldn’t mind giving your fuse box the once over,” she leers. Wonderful stuff.

And that’s just about that for this week.

Coronation Street weekly update - Funeral, Truth and a Big Winter Coat

Corrie weekly updates from 1995
All the wit and warmth of Weatherfield
None of the waffle - and all for just 99p

This was the week when Sinead’s funeral took place. Daniel returned for the funeral and as is the way with funerals in soap, got up to say a few words and didn’t sit down again. He spent the rest of the week trying to cope, drinking to help him forget. But things get even worse when the flat is broken into and the laptop is stolen, the one with Sinead’s videos on it that she recorded for baby Bertie. Daniel loses the plot, storms into a pawn shop and smashes the place up when the shopkeeper refuses to hand over a laptop that Daniel thinks is his (it isn’t). It’s left to Peter to calm things down with a kind word to the shopkeeper who drops the charges against Daniel. But will the laptop be found?

Yes, indeed it will. And it’s found in Kel’s house. What’s it doing there, I hear you cry! Well, Billy the vicar gets Gemma’s mum Bernie a job cleaning the church. Evil Kel takes Bernie on her first day at work and while they’re in the church, Kel nicks the vicar’s diary so he knows what services are being held in church on what day. When he knows Sinead’s funeral is taking place and everyone’s at the church, he breaks into Daniel’s flat and nicks loads of stuff including the laptop.  Now then, this is all a ruse to get us to the next part of the story, which fair broke my heart.

Bernie and Gemma break into Kel’s house to get the laptop back. But while they’re there they find a stash of old photographs. The photos are of Paul when he was a boy and there are more photos too, of other boys. This was just awful, really sad, and Paul breaks down in front of his mum, Billy and Gemma and tells them about how Kel abused him when he was small.  Bernie takes the photos to the cop shop and reports an historic abuse case. Meanwhile, Paul tells Gemma he’s buried the past and doesn’t want it raked up again. This was a raw, powerful scene that shattered my heart. Writing at its finest from Ian Kershaw and acting at its best from Peter Ash who plays Paul.

Elsewhere this week, more shenanigans at the Bistro between Michelle and Robert and Vicky. I’m still either fast-forwarding through these scenes or watching them on mute. I have no idea what’s going on, it’s so dull.

Meanwhile, Ken turns poorly with pneumonia and is taken to hospital.  But for Carla and Peter, they’re happy looking after little Bertie while Daniel tries to sort out his mind after losing Sinead. They make a happy family and Peter tells Carla she’d have made a great mum.

Another lost relative arrives this week. Last week it was Roy’s brother and niece. This week it’s Michael Bailey’s baby daughter. Michael spies his ex, Grace, in Freshco’s car park and demands to see their child. What child? Who’s Grace? It’s all a bit contrived for my liking. Aggie wants to call the cops to demand access to her granddaughter. I just want my Friday night Corrie to bring a few laughs.

Over at Fiz’s house, Hope is still acting up and Evelyn and Jade are siding against Fiz in her own home. I didn’t like this one little bit. Fiz has her faults (don’t we all?) but she loves Hope, she’s just at her wits end not knowing what to do.

And that’s just about that for this week.
