Bethany Platt in new sex ring plot storyline

We've already revealed that new character Nathan will be joining Coronation Street on Boxing Day.  You can read more about Nathan here.

And now, Mr Curry Sauce tells the Sun on Sunday that Nathan is going to get Bethany involved in a sex grooming storyline.

The source tells the tabloid:  "This storyline was not undertaken lightly, it was the subject of major discussions among the show’s writers and bosses. But in the end they agreed that, while controversial, it was very important.

"We know Bethany’s popular with girl viewers and hope to make them aware of the risks of this situation. The really sinister element is that, while viewers will be aware Bethany’s boyfriend is bad news, she’ll have no idea. Hopefully that will resonate.”

Corrie fans may remember that Bethany's mum Sarah was herself a victim of a sex pervert too. Back in 2001 Sarah met her internet boyfriend for their first offline date, but Gary wasn't the 19-year-old boy he claimed to be. Gary was an internet stalker, who groomed his young victims on the net.

I am not looking forward to this storyline at all. Like the blogger pointed out this was done with Sarah. Why can't the writers let this kid be happy and make some proper friends. Very disappointed.

I appreciate that Bethany has reached rock bottom and is vulnerable to manipulation, but this is a young woman who found her way to Weatherfield from Milan. The writers would like us to forget that Bethany was once a very smart gal who could wrap people round her little finger. After the bullying finished, it would have made much more sense for Bethany to go to a college of education for her exam resits where she would make new friends. I wonder if this storyline was intended for Faye but she was then given the dodgy boyfriend instead.

I wish shows came up with original ideas. There have been quite a few movies or shows about this including Corrie, why not have one with a situation a teenager is much more likely to go through like Bethany learning to take her studies seriously and touring local schools to see where she'd fit in. That would be as original as the bullying storyline was. Sordid has been done to death.

No, no, no... can't the writers think up something else... ANYTHING else for her to do? These writers think that one horror after another is going to make Bethany an interesting character. Far from it. Bethany has turned into an unbelievable and boring character.

I agree with Anonymous[14;31]and don't like that the writers are recycling Sarah's storylines for Bethany.First it was the crush on an older bloke[Sarah had one on mechanic Sam Kingston and Bethany had one on Callum]and now this storyline.
I would've preferred to see Bethany befriended by Craig Tinker and follow his footsteps to pursue an education instead of a new character [when there's too many now] brought in for yet another sordid storyline.

This is just too disturbing :( It's a horrible thing in real life and I think they are just using it to get ratings.

Oh for goodness sake, writers, haven't you got any imagination at all? How about Bethany goes to college and has to deal with the ups and downs there? I agree with previous comments - just a re-hashed sordid plot line, used in the hope of luring more viewers. It could make this fan turn off.

Why would she have to tour local schools to see where she'd fit in? She already attends a local sixth form college

Thumbs down from me too. Not more misery, please! When will they realise that positive and happy plots can make good telly!

I meant for the next step. Don't people in GB go look at universities or technical schools to see in person whether they like the school, students and most important if it offers the education and services they want? Of course you can check out some of that online but, whenever possible, people here (in Canada) go have a tour of the institutions that seem the most promising to make a final decision. All Bethany ever does is make eyes at men, it would be nice to see her think about what she wants to do for a living instead of repeating Sarah or Rosie's aimless storylines.

Yes, they do, all the time, but in the second year of sixth form, not the first. She only started in September. More than likely they'd move away from home, and not stay local. They'd probably spread their wings more than stay near to home

Can we first see how it plays out before casting judgement? I've often not liked the sound of a storyline only to be pleasantly surprised (Mary's son being the most recent example)

I'm with you on this one. Unfortunately this type of thing goes on, and if it makes just one youngster aware of what goes on with the grooming process, the surely it's been a success

Maricha, Bethany does know what she wants to do, she wants to be a vlogger. She said so in a recent episode

Well, even to do that, she'd better learn to do lighting, film, attract viewers to her YouTube channel, manage money and secure endorsements. Not that you can't manage to learn all that by trial and error but since technical schools cover some of that she could attend one. I'm just tired if everyine not getting an education and ending up drifting between the Rovers and Underworld for a job. Bethany seems headed straight for that now.

Maricha, chill. I think it was a joke!

Just another sordid storyline to add to the growing mountain of misery on the street. I just don't understand why.
