Claire King reveals why she's leaving Coronation Street

Claire King, who plays Erica Holroyd in Coronation Street, was interviewed on ITV's Good Morning Britain today. And she talked about why she was leaving Coronation Street and the role of Erica behind her.

Claire said this about Erica:  "She was a different character to what I'm usually perceived as playing, but I thought that she was such a natural character and a proper Coronation Street character. And then she started changing a bit so... and she had no family, she didn't come in with a family - she was a bit of a pinball pinging about. So yeah, she kind of changed a bit and I just thought, 'Right, this isn't the character that originally started'."

She also said that pulling a pint in the Rovers Return was one of the things on her bucket list - and something she managed to do!

Asked whether she considered heading back to Emmerdale as Kim Tate, she confessed that there was a possibility.

She said: "The door's not locked and I'd never say never."

Good for Claire King, saying exactly why she's leaving rather than 'been brilliant ... want to try new things ...' Sounds like she's firmly closed the door behind her. In any case, what reason would there be for her to come back? Erica was never given a chance. She should have been working with Liz in the Rovers but they stuck her with Dev in a shop?? Claire must have been bored out of her mind. She also confirms what many of us think, that new characters work best if they are attached to an established family. Good luck to Claire.

Agree with what Humpty D said. Claire King leaving is a loss for the show. It's not often we get a new little bit older female character, and she has the talent for what could have been a long term colourful one. Lesson for the future - as important as the younger demographic is, the world quickly gets boring with no balance of ages. I wish her luck a more appreciation.

They never really knew what to do with her right from the start. An affair and an ambivalent pregnancy with Nick? Might have worked except there was no love lost there. Pairing her with Dev might have given Dev a new lease on life, but instead, Erica disappeared after a few confrontations with the children. Sticking her in the corner shop was the death toll ringing for the character with the desperate almost affair with Kevin Webster being the exit ramp off the Corrie highway.

This character definitely didn't end up doing anything I hoped for her. I can understand the actress moving on.

I feel so bad for Claire, she is worth much more than they gave her.

Jeanie (anon):

Lewdly leering at and propositioning Zeedan, going into full gold-digger mode with Dev, being spiteful and vicious to Mary...the ptb have clearly decided to make her last days undignified and miserable. They could have at least let her walk away with her pride and self-respect intact; what's the benefit of bringing Erica down like this before she leaves?

They did this with Carla before she left - changing the character to suit the story.

Carla would never have bowed down to Tracey, and yet, it happened.

It's a great shame that the character of Erica has not been used as effectively as she might have been. I think this was also the case with Dennis Tanner and Michael Rodwell.

Freddie Smith probably did not realise his full potential either.

This also makes me somewhat anxious for the future of Roy Cropper now that the scrpitwriters have decided not to marry him off with Cathy and there seems little chance of them getting together again now that she has taken up with the obnoxious Brian. If Roy is simply left to bumble about in the cafe on his own without a partner or any major storylines such as he had with Hayley it could make his future less than secure if it is decided that nothing further can be done with his character or if David Neilson becomes dissatisfied with the role.

This is certainly a testament to exactly what is wrong with this show. The writers have no clue what to do with characters other than unplanned pregnancies, affairs and out of character behaviour. They need new direction and Kate Oates is not the one to make it better.

Saw some clips on 'Lorraine' of when she first started on the Corrie. She looked much better and more vibrant then.

Once more, Corrie missed the boat here. It would have been so much fun to see her working behind the bar with Liz. I am so disappointed about losing the really fine actors who played Erica, Freddie and Steph at the Bistro. And yet we have Robert and Michelle still hanging around. Go figure!

I miss Freddie and Steph, I'll miss Erica too, I kept waiting for Freddie and Erica's characters to develop and they just never did, I thought Steph would have stayed longer, I was disappointed when she left.
