British
broadcast television is 80 years old this week. To commemorate its
birthday, a list has been compiled by the Press Association of the 20
most watched transmissions of all time (excluding repeats, films, sport
and major news events).
And in that list of the 20 most watched transmissions of all time, Coronation Street features four - yes four - times.
Here are the Coronation Street episodes which made the top 20:
In at No. 9 of 20
Coronation Street (ITV, 2 January 1985): 21.40 million
The episode where Bet Lynch becomes landlady of the Rovers Return.
In at No 18 of 20
Coronation Street (ITV, 18 December 1980): 20.80 million
Post blog note from Corriepedia: The episode claimed - in the PA press release - as having the highest rating in 1980 was in fact the episode shown on 18/2/1981. 18/12/1980 was a Thursday
It's this episode here starring Ken and Deirdre.
In at Joint No. 20
Coronation Street (ITV, 9 January 1985): 20.60 million
Coronation Street (ITV, 16 January 1985): 20.60 million

Thanks John. Looks like the PA press release was wrong, I'll update the blog post with your comment.
Shouldn't Hilda's final episode be on this list?
The list is of single showings of a programme on one channel. Hence, no World Cup or Royal Wedding. It also means that episodes of Coronation Street that claimed to have a high rating due to a repeat showing in the same week don't make the list - and that includes Hilda's last episode which gained 17,973,000 viewers on its initial Xmas Day showing. It also shows, to my immense satisfaction, that the claims made by EastEnders over the years to their high viewing figures in 1986 are a load of tosh.
