Ryan Thomas on Jason's meltdown and leaving Coronation Street

There's an interview with Ryan Thomas, who plays Jason Grimshaw on Coronation Street, in this week's Radio Times online.

Ryan talks about Jason's upcoming storyline next week when his dad Tony dies.  I still think it's a bad decision on Corrie's part to kill off Tony, he was one of the best baddies we've had in a long time.

Anyway, Ryan also reveals that Jason's friendship with Phelan grows even though Phelan is up to no good and is perhaps after Jason's inheritance that Tony leaves him.

When asked about leaving Coronation Street, Ryan replies:  "I can’t even begin to think about it - I don’t think I can even answer that at the moment, I have no words for that one. I have no idea what my exit storyline is because I don’t tend to try and find that sort of stuff out."

Will anyone miss Jason Grimshaw? I'm not sure I will. And there's a couple of characters I wish he'd take with him too. *cough, Maria, Sharif, cough*

See who else is leaving or returning to the show.

I'll miss Jason - he was good for a laugh and easy on the eyes!
I'm not really fond of this habit the writers have gotten into of changing a character's character to fit the story.

I'll miss him. His as thick as they come but still manages to find pearls of wisdom and great kindness. He's a good son and loyal friend, the nice boy next door who I'd want as a neighbor, and, bonus, he's still a bit of eye candy. Wish RT well, and hope Jason will come back for an occasional visit.

Agree with abbyk. He's a decent sort and could have made a good team with Eva; they worked far better than Aidan and Eva. But then they messed about with his character, making him immediately believe that she was having an affair with his father. Now come on, really! I lost interest after that and haven't got into the Phelan storyline at all. Hope he does well and if Eileen stays on the Street, he could come back in a few years' time.

I'll miss him too, pity the powers that be can't find interesting stories about nice characters. Too much sensational- explosive - unbelievable rubbish now. Jason is a nice guy. I hope he comes back.

He was one of of those " part of the furniture" characters. Never the most exciting or interesting, but nor was he ever an irritant unlike quite a few of the other characters. The ones I'd happily say goodbye to- Michael,Nick,Michelle,Gemma,Sean,Sophie,Alya,Izzy,Maria,Robert,Tracy,Aidan,Kate,Dev,Chesney,Faye,Rana. And they're just the really annoying ones! There are a number of others who I wouldn't particularly miss either.

I would clearly love to see the back of Tracy, Robert, Maria, Kate and Izzy.

I'd love to say good by to just about everyone except Jason. He wasn't always such a plank. Back around the time he was due to marry Sarah Platt, he showed much intelligence as well as insight. I also remember he showed a great deal of family loyalty, in contrast to Eileen, to his grandfather who was set to marry Rita but died amidst the revelation that in his youth he had raped an underaged girl. The writers did a great disservice to this character by drastically dumbing him down to fit the storylines. I suspect this actor got tired of the terrible writing in general and in particular the lack of challenge in the storylines affecting him.

Good bye Jason, you took the edge of that awful harpy Eileen. I will miss what you once were.

I just hope this doesn't open the door to Phelan taking over the builder's yard. :( I don't know of anyone else who could take it over. Gary used to work for Jason but he's nowhere near knowledgeable enough to take it on.

I have an idea that Phelan will scupper one of Jason's jobs and ruin his reputation. As an act of great kindness, he will take on the business for a share of Jason's inheritance (costs and all that, you know) allowing Jason to head somewhere new. I haven't taken to Phelan, he's 100% menacing and zero connection with Eileen. They need to give him a lighter touch, some humour and definitely some sex appeal. That's why I'll miss Jason: great with Eileen, different sides to his character and easy on the eye. Good luck to Ryan Thomas.

Jason really developed into a lovely bloke and it's a shame they seem to intend to ruin him upon his departure - like a lot of characters. However, since Jason one time tried to get it on with Gail for a bit of afternoon delight while over at her place to work on something, it's really no wonder he's finally snapped! Must have been a ticking time-bomb of insanity for a long time now...

I'll miss Jason for sure. He had some great storylines over the years.

He is one of my favourite male characters.
