If Mary's mother was cast - who should play her?

Reading blogger Ruth's post about battleaxes made me think even more that this a role that Mary's mother could fill.

I once blogged about Mary's mother here where I mused about her, as I thought she'd passed away. But no, she's very much alive!

Should Mary's mother be brought in as a battleaxe? Or do you think she should be like Fat Brenda - often mentioned but never seen?

I think we should see her. But if Coronation Street ever did bring Mary's mother into the show, who do you think would play her?  Which actress would YOU cast to play her?

Julie Walters is often quoted as saying she'd love a role in Corrie. I think she'd be perfect.

If Julie were to play the role, then the character would only be available for a brief period. If we wanted a more regular character then I think that they would would have to look elsewhere. Annette Badland would have been wonderful, but sadly Eastenders have nabbed her. How about Judy Cornwell? She's a very good actress, gifted at comedy and would be a good physical match with Patti Clare.

Lynda Baron for mother - and Liza Tarbuck for cousin.

the actress who plays Auntie Brenda on Stella- The Auntie Brenda personality would be perfect to produce a character like Mary,

Saw the blog title title and Julie Walters instantly sprung to mind. It could be quite funny for the character to turn up and be completely different to how Mary has described her. This awful, controlling battleaxe of a woman just turning out to be a figment of Mary's overactive imagination could be an interesting twist..

I'd rather not ever meet Mary's mother. However, if she were to be cast, much as I love Julie Walters, I don't think she would be suitable, as she looks nothing like Mary.

I think Mary's mom should be played by a female impersonator.

What about Patricia Poutledge? She played Hyacinth Bouquet in Keeping up appearances.

Sorry, meant Routledge!

Patricia Routledge would be a great choice if she still working.

Funny, I always refer to Sally as Hyacinth! 'The boooooquet residence, lady of the house speaking!' Oh I loved that show!

Mary's mother seems too abusive to be a battleaxe. But I LOVE the idea of making her totally the opposite of everything Mary claims. If we had never seen Brendan and only had Mary's rhapsodizing to go by how would we have imagined him? Or if we had never met Norris and we had only Mary's descriptions of him?

She's an entirely unreliable narrator,so who knows what her mother's really like?

Am I the only one who has grown to loathe Mary?

At first, as a minor character, especially as a foil to deflate Norris's ego, she was fun. Recently however, she seems to crop up in more and more scenes, and her once funny occasional mentions of her numerous (imaginary?) past life experiences have become an endless stream of meaningless drivel, with her contunially butting into other characters' scenes.

Marry her off to Dev, and let them both move far, far away.

Totally agree. I've never liked Mary and she irritates me. I wish they would get rid of her.
