FIRST OFFICIAL PIC! Coronation Street's new set

Here it is in all its glory - the very FIRST official picture of Coronation Street's new set in Manchester's Media City.

19 different types of brick, seven different types of mortar and a whole heap of cobbles required.

This is the first official shot of the new 7.7 acre Coronation Street site, currently under construction at MediaCityUK.

The build of the new lot continues apace and you can clearly identify Corrie's new footprint. Whilst replicating the current set the new set is bigger allowing greater production flexibility.

Construction is expected to continue until the end of 2013. The programme continues to film at Quay Street until they move to their new home at a date to be agreed in due course.

This job seems to be taking forever. I know there was a problem and one building had to be torn down and rebuilt, but still, what is taking so long? Maybe I'm just used to the speed of construction in North America, (which is still slower than some countries) but skyscrapers go up much faster than the pace of this project!

Wow! They are further along than I thought.

It looks as if they have also built a full size Mawdsley Street doesn't it? I wonder if that means lots more families.

Also, judging by the size of the factory, they are possibly going to start filming inside there again. They had to move the set inside the studios on Quay Street because it was too cold in the old factory.

Very interesting. Thanks Flaming Nora!

If you look closely the Mawdsley Street "backage" is purely that - the backs of the houses with no internals. I see that stupid railway bridge next to the Rovers is still there...

Yes the Mawdsley Street will just be one sided "fronts" with the ginnel to be between them and the Coro houses

If it won't be finished until the end of the year, then why is construction on the Rovers going so quickly?

It looked like it was going well when Stella and Karl spoke to Owen. :S
