Coronation Street taken off air in America

Post-Blog Note:
Earlier this week, we broke this story which was then picked up by the Mirror from our site. The Mirror has now credited us as their source with a link from their story. All other online sources which then picked up this story are either crediting The Mirror as their source or not naming any source.

There's sad news for Coronation Street fans in America who are no longer able to watch their favourite show via Hulu.

With thanks to Corrie fan Flo in the USA for alerting us to this. It appears that Hulu is not showing any more new episodes of Coronation Street.

The Hulu.com website for Coronation Street states: "New episodes will be unavailable as of April 7th, 2016" .

Hulu has been showing Coronation Street in the USA since 2013. Fans have taken to social media to complain but as yet, there is no statement on the Hulu website to say if Coronation Street will be back in the US, or not.

Please please please - if you are in the US and watching Corrie on something other than Hulu, do not mention where as that will be the next to go. Hulu is the third or fourth place to be warned to pull Corrie from their channel due to copyright infringement.

Hulu paid ITV for the rights but based on the feedback I've seen from Hulu, the negotiated fee may have been higher than Hulu was willing to pay and make it a profitable property to carry. No copyright infringement here, sounds more like ITV wanted more than Hulu thought it was worth.

Rumor has it that part of the problem is due to a negotiation currently going on between ITV and the BBC in regards to starting a subscription service. Hopeful it will turn up there along with additional UK programming, I would love that. But not holding my breath as it is just a rumor with no additional details.

And yes, Anonymous is right, please do not discuss other options here as to watching alternatives. I started out watching on YouTube since there were no other options until it started on Hulu, but ITV has made darned sure that is no longer available there as well, yanking episodes as fast as someone puts them up.

Hulu has done the same with Hollyoaks as well, leaving that group of fans high and dry, which makes me think this was an issue with ITV. I feel Hulu handled this horribly, it was very sudden with no advance warning. I for one will never subscribe to their service just because of how they handled this. They won't even answer questions about it, just telling everyone to make sure to add it to their "favorites".

Glad I don't live in America then!

Whew, and I was angry that CBC had moved the show for the Stanley Cup Playoffs!
Once again I am very glad I don't live in America!

As a British expatriate living in California, I was enjoying Corra on Hulu for a couple of years until it all got bogged down with the eternal Callum plot. I've found myself not bothering with it for a few months now, but it would be nice to still have the option. I'm hoping to move back to the UK within the next year. It remains to be seen whether or not I'll reconnect with Corra.

Oh, I am bereft!! I used to watch it on the CBC from Western New York, missed it for years when I moved away, and was thrilled to be able to watch it again through Hulu! So unfair!

Being a Canadian and hearing what is going on down there with LGBT in certain states recently and the evangelical influence throughout the entire country I am not surprised to hear this at all. If we watch a program that has come from the states every naughty word is beeped and even a baby's bum is blanked out so no one can see such a terrible thing. US censoring is absolutely ridiculous. This does not happen with British or Australian or South Africa programming only stuff that comes from the states. So the fact that there are two lesbians and two gays on C street what can you expect.

I could be totally wrong but their entire country is going bug shit. Also we can not get Hulu in Canada so I am not sure what the censoring is like on that network. So the rumour of negotiations between BBC and ITV does not ring true to me at all.

Here's an article about the talks:
http://informitv.com/2016/03/10/bbc-and-itv-in-online-video-talks/

There are several other articles about it as well.

As far as censorship, your information is wrong. You make it sound like we are all bat crap crazy conservatives. Sorry, but no. Only certain channels do that, and it's been like that FOR YEARS. It's not really any different than what they do in the UK during what is known as "watershed". We also have many lesbian and gay story lines on shows here. One of the biggest talk show hosts in this country is a very open lesbian, and her show is on 5 days a week. It is also hugely popular and has been on for quite a while. Your assumption is horribly inaccurate.

Then how do you explain Modern Family being the number one comedy show with a gay couple on regular network Prime time TV? Or Shades of Gray featuring gay sex scenes not blanked out, or the very popular lesbian love stories on Grey's Anatomy? The US has plenty of gay friendly shows. Ellen is still number one for daytime. And when you get into cable shows, there is an even bigger presence.
Making broad generalizations about an ENTIRE country going bug shit just gives people the wrong impression. Do you honestly think that Canada does not have it's share of anti-gay issues. I live in the Gayborhood in Toronto and let me tell you...YES, it does.
The Hulu Corrie debacle has nothing to do with homesexuality but as always...it is about MONEY.

Well no longer going to be subscribing to Hulu then and will for sure let them know this is the reason why! This makes me so upset!

Lynne from Ottawa -- CBC.CA has episodes of Corrie. I don't know if it's accessible to people from the US -- maybe worth a try.

Clicking on the viewer makes it go black and says, "This content is currently unavailable"

Is there not a legal way to pay for access to a UK Internet hub that can then legally take you to ITV to watch Corrie?

filmon.com will get you corrie live and all terrestrial channels - if you don't want to wake uр at 'stuрid o'clock' in the morning to watch it on ITV, then try ITV2 the next day :)

I think Hulu may have "cut their nose off to spite their face" with this one. Seems as though plenty of people are finding other ways to watch AND those who were paying customers are cancelling their subscriptions over it. Bad business move on someone's part. This is becoming an increasing issue with streaming services, shows there one day and gone the next. That's why I didn't renew Amazon Prime.

First they stopped Neighbours and Home and Away now this. Both Hulu and the original producers should have done more to promote these shows. I watched Corrie for many years thru illegitimate methods but I happily paid Hulu to watch foreign sopas here in America. The only reason I signed up for Hulu was to watch foreign content. Without any new foreign content HUlu is useless to me.

Lucky enough to be an American living on the Canadian border. Thank you Canadians for your excellent taste in British soaps. I've been considering moving for work, but where could I keep up with my Corrie obsession?

We're about 2 weeks-ish behind now, but at one point it was more. I went to London and it was surreal to see 2 months ahead Corrie. I may have shouted "Turn it off! Turn it off!" a little too loudly :-)

I guess The Mirror should actually be crediting your source - Flo. They could just as easily have contacted Hulu themselves to obtain confirmation and not needed to cite you as a source at all. All for the all-mighty dollar (and ego).

I simply e-mailed the blog editor to make her aware of it and she chose to write the story. So no, the credit these other sources give does not go to me. She credited me in her article, and the other places who used her article as their source should be crediting Coronation Street Updates. Sure, they could contact Hulu (and some have) but Hulu and ITV are both choosing to remain silent. The simple fact that many of the ones corrected their article to give CSU credit acknowledges the fact that it was published here first.
