Coronation Street Episode Review Monday 31st October
It's a fright night on the cobbles as Caz disappears, leaving false evidence that Maria has done away with her. I find this storyline a bit unbelievable on several levels. Firstly that Caz is clever enough to pull this off. Secondly that anyone would believe wimpy Maria could overpower soldier Caz. Thirdly that Kate, privy to Caz's connivings, would fall for it and fourthly that the police would investigate when Caz has only been "missing" for a few hours. Anyway, Caz has decorated Maria's flat with blood, an overturned vase and a dropped phone, as well as scared voicemail messages. "Honestly, I could kill her", says Maria as she comes home from staying with Piggin' Pablo to find the flat a tip. Changing her mind, she blames Kirk as revenge for a haunted kennels prank back when they were teenagers, but the police think she did it and won't let her back into the potential crime scene, leaving her and Liam to bunk up with Aidan and Eva. Could be interesting!
The story of Sonia 'n' Sharif rumbles on tediously, somewhat enlivened by Zeedan finding out that Sharif "borrowed" £14K from the gym's bank account. Sharif talks his way out of it with both his grandson and Dev, but it leads to some soul-searching by Zeedan, wondering if he's following the right path in his life, what his parents would think of him becoming a chef and on a whim, he proposes to Rana at the bus-stop over a bag of chips. Who says romance is dead, right? She says she has to think about it, rushing off quickly and dropping the chips. More proposals are going on as Dev introduces a new t-shirt and baseball cap uniform in the corner shop and asks Erica to move in with him, the twins and Mary. She says no to the former but yes to the latter and she's soon bobbing for apples with a very unimpressed Aadi and Asha and a wonderfully costumed Mystic Mary.
Talking of costumes, the barmaids at the Rovers are dressed as the Witches of Eastwick, although I thought Liz was Vegas Cher, Michelle was Charity Dingle and Eva a ginger Morticia. Michelle wants Steve to be Jack Nicholson but he dresses up as Uncle Fester, as did Kirk. But who wore it best?
Meanwhile in the spin off show, Weatherfield General, Anna has the skin graft on her legs. Fay(e) doesn't want to go to the hospital, insisting on going to school instead, which really means sitting in a park with Seb the shoplifter and some alcopops. Eventually though, she breaks down, and he's pretty sensitive for a 14 year old boy and so takes her in to see her mum. We don't see Ken this episode though as he has banned his family from reading stories from the Weatherfield Gazette to him, something that both Tracy and Simon blame Peter for. In matching leather blousons, Peter tells Simon that he doesn't want their relationship to end up like Ken and Peter's, with each resenting the other for things not said, or done. "I'm not going to stop trying to make things right," Peter tells his son, who does his patented running head first into a hug thing. It was sweet though.
Finally at the hospital, after some dithering, Leanne and Nick find out that they're having a boy. Steve finds out too and promises them that he still won't want anything to do with his son. He says that now...

What was that broken lock on the outside of the bathroom? OK, I get it, little Maria is supposed to have bundled army trained Caz into the bathroom and locked her in ... Evidently, Maria put the lock on herself because we haven't seen it there before. Or perhaps it's the inside lock and Maria then climbed out the window. The Corrie police are becoming a writers in-joke. No 1 police officer is always surly and a bit menacing, and police officer no 2 always stands silently looking a bit fearsome. Dear, dear, some truly dreadful scenes last night.
I really didn't enjoy the Maria/Caz storyline at all last night. So many holes in the plot line. I really cannot understand why Kate, who knows Caz is a liar, instantly believes that Maria has done something sinister to Caz, such an instant about turn. Please make this storyline stop soon
my biggest surprise was Michelle - I didn't recognize her at all. The rest, well, the rest was the rest. Nothing more need be said.
I agree. I did a double take before I realised it was Michelle. I did love Eva's red wig though
I thought Eva was Jessica Rabbit. Guess I don't get out enough.
After such good drama last week, this MariCaz thing is a reminder of how bad life can get in the blink of an eye. It was nice to see Maria react to the Kafkaesque scenario and for once Aiden wasn't a lummox. And that's all.
Petty quibble I know, but I was shocked to see Rana throw her chips in the bushes and not a bin.
that's not a petty quibble - if Corrie wants to be recognized as "green" then chips should either be recycled or disposed of properly, not left to critters eating in bushes. YUCK. I wonder if worms like vinegar and salt?
It would have been hilarious if Caz had been hiding out in the same bushes.
Kate, who's had nothing but trouble with lying-Caz, suddenly turns on Maria and blames her for Caz's disappearance? Sorry writers, the old quote "Buy the premise, buy the bit" is still necessary, and this scenario doesn't even come close.
(definition of the aforementioned quote: If you believe in the position that the speaker's coming from, you'll believe where they're taking you.)
A storyline involving Caz, even an absent Caz is too much Caz for me. Please, please let this be over quickly and let her be gone for good. If Maria and Kate.....and Aidan, for that matter.....go with her, so much the better!! On another note, I thought Michelle in that wig, looked like Maria.
Ooh no, don't get rid of Aidan, I love him. But please get rid of Caz and Kate, both nasty characters. Also Alya and Rani can sling their hooks.
I didn't know Dolly Parton was in the Witches of Eastwick!
Definitely get rid of Caz, Alya, Rani and Kate - non of them add to the show. I would like to see the Nazirs just boiled down to Yasmeen and Zeedan - the only 2 of the clan whose characters have any promise.
I'm trying to figure out why Caz is still on the street. The only reason I can come up with is that she wants free room and board.
Anon 1839: I was also horrified to see chips just being thrown in the bushes when there are plenty of bins around, but this sort of thing happens all too often in soaps, along with folk chucking full paper cups of coffee in litter bins without emptying them in the gutter first. Setting a really bad example and it certainly doesn't add to the drama if that's the intention, just annoys me and hopefully many other viewers.
