Hilda is surely one of the most iconic women to appear in any soap opera, or indeed any television show. In a poll in the1980s to find the most recognisable woman in Britain, Hilda came in 4th, after the Queen, the Queen Mother and Princess Diana.
The scene, after Stan's death, when Hilda comes home from the hospital and puts his glasses on the table, then weeps uncontrollably, has to be one of the most tender and poignant moments in TV history.
On her departure from Weatherfield, 27 million viewers tuned in to see her on her way to a new life as housekeeper to Doctor Lowther.
Thank you, Jean Alexander for portraying Hilda so brilliantly.

Really, REALLY saddened to hear of the death of one of the icons of my childhood. Jean Alexander was a class act. She will always remain my absolute favourite Coronation Street character, the indomitable Mrs O, cleaning that pub, as well as the grotty Baldwin's Casuals factory for something like 25 years, and quaffer of the occasionally sophisticated glass of 'char-bliss' at Dr Lowther's. She expertly rendered a working-class post-war English woman of limited education, who was nevertheless never just played for laughs, who had endless innocent aspirations for a better life, and yet could take such delight in very little. Although largely the inspiration for 'Acorn Antiques' Mrs Overall, Hilda, who could be nosy, argumentative and judgemental, was also an immensely loveable, very hard worker and, in later years, a surrogate mother to numerous characters. The absolute last of the Greats. RIP Jean; the world's your lobster, chuck. X
