Michelle breaks down and tells Leanne she’s so worried the baby could have MD it seems the only way. Can Leanne give Michelle the support she needs?

Luring Kirk to No.5 on the pretext of a plumbing problem, Kirk lets himself in to find his surprise. Will it be enough to win Kirk over?
KEN STRUGGLES TO ADAPT. As Simon reads aloud to Ken at his bedside, Peter and Audrey arrive. Believing Peter to have caused Ken’s stroke, Simon snipes at him and Audrey’s embarrassed. Ken listens frustrated, wishing he was well enough to intervene. When Simon then insists they do a crossword it’s too much for Ken who loses his temper and orders him to leave.

When a rival kebab shop owner calls in Prima Doner and threatens to sue Dev for replicating his uniforms, Alya steps in and pointing out you can’t copyright a colour and the logos are different, sends him packing. Dev’s impressed and when Alya suggests she designs some new uniforms for the shop, he’s all for it.

FRIDAY OCTOBER 28TH

Buoyed by Robert’s words, Michelle assures Amy that she’s going to have the baby. Nick promises Leanne he’ll stand by her whatever the outcome of Steve’s test. As the genetic counsellor breaks the news of his results to Steve and Michelle will they get the outcome they’re all so badly hoping for?

I expected Corrie to handle the genetic MD storyline much better than they are. There is no reason for Michelle to have an abortion for fear that the baby will have MD without further testing. I think there is a test on the fetus of the baby & yes there is the possibility that the mother may loose the baby, but the percentage is small and it seems better than just having an abortion. I honestly expected Corrie to tread lightly in such a difficult decision for any couple that would be going through this.

I've had a very busy week and I haven't watched Wednesday's episode yet. Has something already happened between Michelle and Robert? Or else why should he be "stunned" to find out she's pregnant? Why is it any business of his?

I thought they were aiming to stick Michelle with him, but so soon?

I'm a bit puzzled by this as well. Did these characters have a one night stand I can't remember because I'm not sure they should be able to pick each other out of a crowd from the rare interactions I can remember them having.

I'm also a bit puzzled by this - at first she wouldn't talk to him because of what happened with Carla - understandable to a point, but then he comforted her on the stairs after the "explosive car" understandable, but then the other night she went to the Bistro with some shopping bags and then left in a huff because he was there alone? Couldn't understand that reaction either.

I agree with Anonymous [04;01]That Michelle is jumping the gun with wanting an abortion when the results of the genetic test aren't done yet.Unfortunately I think self centered Michelle is the worse character for the MD storyline which is becoming a disappointment. my greatest fear is being realised,MD is being used as a ploy for Michelle to find out about Steve and Leeanne and turn to Robert for comfort with MD forgotten.

I just don't understand anyone wanting to go with someone who has had sex with their relative.

How old is Steve supposed to be, around 40? So far he shows no signs of a genetic disease affecting his life. Michelle is already considering an abortion? So because there's even a chance that the baby MAY have a genetic disorder, it will somehow affect HER enough that she wants to abort it now. Never mind that the baby could enjoy a nice life until at least the year 2056 (if the baby is like Steve, gene-wise). And of course there will also be NO improvements in gene therapy before 2056. No, you're right Michelle - you need to cut the baby's life short now, while you can. You've already had to shed a couple of tears. We don't want YOUR life to be any more inconvenienced...

Considering an abortion? There's nothing like jumping the gun instead of remaining calm and waiting for Steve's test results, is there!

Poor Michelle... the baby might not be 100% perfect, so consider killing it.

While I believe in choice, it does seem a bit previous to consider termination when you don't know if the baby even has the gene. And even then, consider this: Jim McDonald had the gene and the symptoms didn't appear until he was what? 60? Michelle was considering how difficult Izzy sometimes finds it looking after Jake with her disability but Michelle, remember this, it didn't stop Izzy from becoming a mother just the same. It's difficult sometimes for her but she manages. If Steve became symptomatic with a small child of his own, he'd manage, too.

I have to agree with Anon 16;10 - it's a long drawn out storyline so Michelle finds out about Leanne's baby, runs from Steve into Robert's arms. As much as I really like Robert right now, I would have a hard time taking him seriously because he was married to the she-devil herself who divorced him then he lost his second wife and restaurant to return to the devil's side, then he finally left her.
Who knows if he'll get the urge to return. YUCK.

The fact that Steve's father was diagnosed so late in life because he must have seemed fine before and that Steve is physically healthy at 40 is exactly why I didn't understand why the writers thought this problem would draw us in. A neurological disease that would manifest this late in life wouldn't be much of a concern even for Amy let alone a newborn with all the discoveries being made every day. Having Michelle looking into an abortion under these non-urgent circumstances just makes it seem like she's simply changed her mind about being pregnant. At her age she should already be getting an amniocentesis to test for much more likely issues like Down's syndrome.

I think the reason why MD would be more of an issue for Amy and the babies is because it can manifest itself earlier and more seriously every generation it is passed on to. So its affecting Jim at 60, it could affect Steve at, say 45, it could affect the kids at 20 or so... still doesn't explain any need for abortion however; just Michelle being Michelle.

@Cacophony,
I had no idea a genetic disorder like MD could get more serious with successive generations. Does it happen because the likelihood increases that one parent who carries the gene will have children with another carrier even if they had the luck of only having one parent with the gene? If so, should Michelle (and Leanne)have been tested too?

I thought for a minute that Michelle was going to suggest killing Amy now because she might get sick one day...

Maricha said...

Lol, she might have if it wasn't that she'd have to contend with Liz and Tracy to do it.

I'm still a bit puzzled over this MD. Does Steve not having the illness himself also mean he can't pass on the gene to his children?

Another thing - Michelle's "tablet" looked like a laptop to me, and surely the screen would have timed out between Michelle closing it and Amy looking at it much later?
