There have been mixed comments left here on the Coronation Street Blog about Mary getting close to Dev's kids on Coronation Street last night.
Mary fans are delighted she's on screen once more, her happy, smiling face giving a lift to life on the Street. But those same fans also remember that underneath the smile and the muu-muu lies the black heart of a damaged soul.
Let's not forget that a deranged Mary held Norris hostage in a cottage, or that she tried to split up Roy and Hayley and almost lost Roy his licence at the cafe. I'm sure she means well when she takes on projects such as "helping" Hayley plan the Cropper wedding, but her obssessive behaviour soons kicks in to whatever she's doing and she wants to take over, getting on people's nerves and doing herself no favours at all.
I used to like Mary but realise now that she is not a nice person, and therefore ideally suited to Norris, who is also another right nasty piece.
I'm sure it won't be long before Mary's obsessive behaviour with Dev's kids will start and we'll see the darker Mary emerge once again.

Dreadful character, sooner they get rid of her the better. Can't watch when she's on.
I can see your point but I still enjoy Mary most of the time, apart from when she's being REALLY nasty. I love the way Patti Clare plays the character, and in the early days they gave her some great one-liners. Not a very realistic character, but great fun when written for laughs. She could really work as a longterm second-string character if they move her away from the nastiness. Ditto Gloria for that matter. I live in hope:)
i agree with njblas, marys NOT areal person so the writers could move her character on to be great with the kids,we NEED some happy times in corrie to balance out the show from the misery ,
But give her a proper home !
Mary's a nutcase but that's the very thing that would appeal to Dev's children. Didn't we all have weird teachers who commanded respect? Mary only goes loopy when she feels humiliated - she's not a threat to society. Hope this turns out to be a happy, normal story.
Early days yet, but I hope they keep her as she was last night, she was brilliant with those kids. I'm not a fan of Mary with Norris, he's a hateful character and this rubs off on her.
Oh and PS, she could move in with Dev as a live-in nanny/housekeeper and who knows, without stretching the imagination too much she could turn into a love interest for him.
I'm FAR more worried about what they write for Mary when Hayley leaves. >shudder<
Maybe Mary has found her niche? I hope so..getting sick of all these deranged characters running around. They've all got issues. I find Norris a complete boob. Why Mary would fall in love with him and kidnap him when he's so obviously batting for the other team is beyond me.
The writers are on dangerous ground with Mary. She's now been portrayed several times as unstable, with a very nasty streak. If they now attempt to use her for comic purposes, they will be demeaning the difficulties faced by people with such mental challenges. Yet if they continue to have her behave as malevolently as she has in the past, under these current circumstances, with the responsibility for two vulnerable children in her charge, without having her come to the attention of the legal system, as well as the mental health system, then they lose an opportunity to demonstrate an important, difficult problem and a possible solution.
Having tackled the issues of spousal abuse of husbands and early onset Alzheimer's disease recently, I doubt the producers are ready for another "heavy" topic again, but a storyline for Mary could be like a loaded gun if they're not very careful. Seeing how flippantly the writers have dealt with other complicated, serious issues (e.g. surrogacy, parenthood, etc.) doesn't inspire confidence in the handling of this storyline, but we can hope.
Anyone who encourages children to read 'The Magic Faraway Tree' is OK in my book! :-)
I'm convinced that Mary goes a bit loopy when it comes to romance, likely due to the oppressive relationship she had with her mother. However, I am equally convinced that she'd be great with kids because she is quirky (so can have fun), creative (so can teach them things and help them experience new foods and such), and likely really strongly attracted to providing a good childhood experience (to make up for her own dreadful experience). I can't see how she'd do any harm to Dev's kids. And really, if she was truly a threat why would Norris still hang around with her?
My friends and I love Mary, and she is at her finest when teamed up with Norris. She is also excellent with Emily, Rita and Sylvia. She delivers her lines to perfection. Please let us have more of Mary and Norris as they bring much needed comedy to Coronation Street.
