The Week In Classic Corrie

MONDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 22nd and 24th April 1992

Alec was still looking for ways to pay off his kitchen, and came up with the idea of serving Cajun Chicken and gammon and chips all day.  Betty stamped all over that and refused to work in the evenings as well.  Des turned 27 and Raquel organised a surprise party.  He was delighted (even though, for some reason, they only played music from the sixties throughout) until there was an unexpected guest - Simon the architect, the man who stole Steph away.  He was looking for Steph, who'd walked out on him, but Des scared him off with a threat or two.  Rita went to Boring Ted and confessed that though she loved him and was willing to be with him when he died, she didn't want to be left a widow in Florida, and they'd have to stay in England so she could have her friends around her when the time came.  That left her with the problem of telling Derek and Mavis she wasn't selling the Kabin.

TUESDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 27th and 29th April 1992

Martin finally started his training as a nurse, and his tutor turned out to be Doctor Gaddas, though she was using the name Chris Jones for some reason.  Maybe she went into the witness protection scheme and had to assume a new identity.  Martin felt a bit old and thick amongst all the nursing trainees.  Rita broke it to Mavis that she wasn't selling up, breaking her heart.  She accused her of manipulating them and said she'd never set foot in the Kabin again.  Rita tried to make amends but the Wiltons remained outraged and angry.  Raquel tried to seduce Des with a Peking banquet, dressing up in a cheongsam and feeding him his sweet and sour prawns with a pair of chopsticks.  They were interrupted by Steph on the doorstep with her suitcases.  She needed somewhere to stay and Des let her in, upsetting Raquel and Phyllis because it was blatantly obvious he was still in love with her.

WEDNESDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 1st and 4th May 1992

(Yes, that's the May 1st episode from 1992 being broadcast on May 1st 2019.  Well it amused me.)  Rita went to Mavis and offered her a job as manager of the Kabin to placate her.  She accepted it over Derek's objections, pointing out that one of them had to earn a living, but considered offering him a position as her assistant.  The McDonald boys both lost their girlfriends to education.  Vicky went back to school, while Paula was warned by the headmistress her schoolwork was suffering so she backed off spending her time with Andy.  Steph and Raquel argued, and when Des took his wife's side, Raquel realised she was on a loser.  Bet noticed she was in a bad way and offered her the spare room at the Rovers, so she packed her bags and left Des.  Lisa turned up on the Duckworths' doorstep, heavily pregnant, to tell them that Terry was in Strangeways.  He'd belted a policeman though Vera believed he was innocent; she suggested Lisa should stay with them in Weatherfield to be close to Terry.

THURSDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 6th and 8th May 1992

Steph realised Des was still besotted with her - forty years after everyone else - and broke it to him gently: she already had a new fella lined up.  Filled with self-pity at having nothing left when Steph walked out again, he got hammered and insulted Phyllis, which is unforgivable.  Mavis confessed to Rita that she was hesitating over employing Derek because he was so useless last time.  She finally took him on as her assistant but made it clear she'd was the boss so he could drop any notion of being in charge.  Jack admitted to Alec that Terry was in prison and that he desperately wanted to visit him.  Alec gave him the afternoon off, and he promptly spent it in the bookie's, much to Vera's disgust.  There was even more heartache when Lisa told Vera to give up any idea Terry was innocent - he was banged to rights.  The McDonalds were in dodgy financial straits so Liz took on the job at the Rovers, cooking meals in the evenings.  Can you imagine 2019 Liz turning out pub grub?  It'd be microwaved lasagne that smelt vaguely of B&H.

FRIDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 11th and 13th May 1992

Emily seemed distracted and vague.  This manifested itself mainly in her refusing to put up with Percy's nonsense, so it was less concerning, more understandable.  Vera and Lisa went to Strangeways to visit Terry and he confessed that he had a record and was probably going down for a while.  He proposed marriage to Lisa, suggesting she arrange a church wedding and he could get a day release for the ceremony.  Jack was unimpressed, and doubly so when Lisa admitted she wasn't going to tell her parents because they hated Terry, so that meant the Duckworths would be paying for it.  Andy was stalking Paula even though she refused to talk to him until her exams were done.  He finally had enough and broke off their romance.  Des tried to make things up with Raquel.  She rightly told him to get stuffed.

Yes, I did include that last screengrab so we could all point and laugh at Andy's 90s baggy jeans.  Although @merseytart is glossing over the fact that he was wearing very similar trousers at the time.

Classic Corrie is on ITV3 every weekday at 14:50.
