Corrie Weekly Awards for Feb. 26 - March 2

Boxes Ticked award: Billy's an instant heroin addict. He looks unkempt with black circles under his eyes, he's rude and he throws up in the sink for good measure. The writers seem to have covered all the bases and ticked all the boxes on the "I'm an addict" list, haven't they?

BirdWoman of Alcatraz award: Yasmeen is still keeping the chickens.

Fashion Award: Rosie's Pink mini dress and fluffy coat and laptop cover. But apparently, the town of Warrington didn't appreciate it.

Lines of the week:
Gemma "What do I know about hygiene? This Bra's been on since Friday"
Nicola "For an incredibly smart woman, you're pretty stupid"
Rosie "This outfit was wasted on Warrington"
Yasmeen "Those chickens were hungry, they went mad when they saw the food. If they weren't caged it would be like a scene from The Birds"
Audrey "Anything must be better than showing what you had for breafast in some seedy lapdancing club"
Liz about Moira "That woman takes bitterness to a whole new level"
Leanne "Nothing I like better than a bit of paint porn" (DIY queen in the making?)
Geraldine "I haven't come to cause trouble" Eileen "Yet it still seems to follow you around"

I think the 'Boxes Ticked' award can be given to the other storylines too[Craig's OCD Bethany,David's upcoming rape storyline]!
Coronation Street is no longer a soap opera centered around the day to day lives of it's residents,it's become part 'afterschool specialCraig]and part 'movie of the week;[Billy,Bethany]due to it's issue storylines dominating episodes!

Billy (the sicker) Is so tiring to watch.

What is with all the heavy breathing? First it was Anna with her fear of Phelan, then Billy and his wet breath for weeks and now Craig. Am I the only one noticing this trend?

Jeanie (anon):

No--I feel the same. Every time Billy comes on, he's just so tedious and repulsive at the same time. If anything could make me stop watching, it would be his character. A picture of complete, snivelling abjection, misery, self-debasement and self-flagellation that is at first painful then quickly becomes boring to watch. I think the problem is that his miserable situation has been divorced from any meaningful or integrated storyline that might have shown his downward spiral more slowly and believably. Instead, it's just a case of "give us random scenes of someone totally self-hating, debased, and abject" and intersperse periodically with other storylines. Sort of as if we were to have a reality show that finds someone on the street who is totally wretched and self-hating and films them in close-up, repeatedly. What would be the point of that? Without a meaningful context, scenes of repeated abjection become dehumanizing and voyeuristic.
