Be careful what you wish for
Ken and Dierdre were both excited when Nick told him that he would be getting a company car, in line with the other members of the Clarion Group. His joy was short lived however when he got the car and it was pretty much a mobile advert for the Recorder. However, Ken proved he can make the best of a bad situation by calling it a perk of the job and brilliantly branding himself ‘a jerk with a perk’
Driving Me Crazy
Ken wasn’t the only resident with car trouble. First Rita got annoyed with Alan for buying one with the £6,000 she’d loaned to him to go into business with Dave Craig. Rita said he could’ve bought an older car to do the job, but he insisted it created a better imagine for the company if he had a more modern one. Then Mike found himself in trouble when he got breathalysed by the police and taken in on suspicion of drink driving. Needless to say it didn’t take long to spread round the street and an angry Mike was determined to find out who called the police on him.
Out Oof sight, not out of mind
It’s not often that a character can make a big impact when they’re not even on screen but Audrey managed it from several time zones away, with Alf clearly struggling in his wife’s absence- which gave the locals something else to gossip about. His solution? Get drunk with Rita and reveal the her ‘sick relative’ story wasn’t true. She’s actually out there visiting her son, the brother that Gail never knew she had. Although she didn’t answer the phone for several days she eventually called to say she was on her way home.
Can’t choose your family
While Gina has a different head to the one younger viewers are used to seeing her with, it seems that some things never change- including her ability to annoy Sally at every possible opportunity. While Sally seemed to have a lot more patience with her sister than Kevin (which is admittedly not difficult) the final straw proved to be when she was caught cheating on her boyfriend Billy with Martin, leading to Billy and Martin having a scrap.
Soaps can be educational
The current Classic Corrie episodes are a new experience for me as I wasn’t born until 11 June 1989, so the storyline with Curly and Shirley living together has been a real eye opener at just how different attitudes were back then compared to now. These days two unmarried people living together is no big deal but back then it was a major scandal, especially with Curly being white and Shirley being black. When Curly’s dad visited and saw Shirley he couldn’t get out of there quick enough.
So that’s everything for this week, thanks for reading and I’ll see you again next week
