Sally wins against Kirk to be crowned Mayor of Weatherfield this week - and even Kirk votes for her. But during the campaign, Beth hires a fancy dress outfit so that she can be the flower to Kirkeh’s Buzzer Bee. Which seems a wasteful thing to spend her money on when she’s out of work and skint. But what do I know? Seems I’m out of step with all things Corrie right now and so I’ll apologise now if this week’s update contains scenes of WTF? ETC.
Anyway, Beth goes to the fancy dress shop to return the outfit and pretends she’s never worn it. She wants a full refund but the shopkeeper can tell it’s been worn because it’s covered in food stains, and also because Beth’s picture is in the paper alongside Kirk where she’s wearing the outfit too. An altercation ensues and the cops are called. In comes PC Craig Tinker threatening to arrest his own mum. Poor Craig though, his obsession with timing and detail is threatening to derail him as his obsessive behaviour takes hold.
Elsewhere this week, the Kabin was sold. See, I told you I was out of step with Corrie because the last thing I remember about this was Rita lying in her hospital bed and Colin brought in the papers for her to sign to sell her flat to.him. We never saw her sign them. We never saw Norris sell the Kabin to him either. Neither were mentioned again apart from a throwaway comment on Wednesday night. But somehow Colin now owns the Kabin and the flat. Norris has a retirement party in the Rovers and Rita is homeless as Colin’s bought her flat too.
Never in all my Corrie-watching years has a storyline moved on so quickly, so ridiculously, so thoughtlessly and with such little regard to us fans. We’re supposed to care about the programme but ITV are making it hard for us to do so when it feels like it’s being thrown together right now. Add to the mix this week that there were at least two fluffed lines (one from Gary Windass and one from Queen Rita herself) that went unchanged. It really, really saddens me to see Corrie like this.
The good news however is that Rita is given the all-clear from her brain tumour. It was benign - and a nation raised its glass to HRH Reet of the Lady Tanner.
Michelle goes to visit Robert in prison and despite the fact that his appearance has changed completely and he’s gone silver grey instead of Captain Scarlet black, she gives it scant mention. Also changed appearance completely this week is David Platt who invites Shona to live with them all. David and his new beard and moustache were not commented on once. Come on, Corrie. You know you can do better that this. You’ve had 57 years practice.
Anna gets arrested for pushing Seb off his ladder and wanting the lad dead. She didn’t do it, of course, it’s Phelan’s plan to frame her after he plants one of her ear-rings inside Barlow’s solicitor office. The Corrie comedy coppers arrest her anyway and Anna’s as bitter as you’d expect. Well, you would be too. But there’s worse news for Seb when he’s diagnosed as HIV positive. Faye has a test too and she is free of the virus but Seb now has to come to terms with a life on medication.
Chesney returns from Portugal with son Joseph in tow, who doesn’t say a word, not a word. The lad’s grieving for his mum and having a hard time fitting back into life in the rain and cold of Weatherfield. Chesney dumps Joseph on an uncaring Sinead while he sorts out a school place for his son. And if that wasn’t bad enough, he then tells Sinead she can look after Joseph while Ches is at work. Sinead isn’t best pleased.
Gary finds out that Nicola’s pregnant and goes to confront her, asking her if the baby’s his. She says it’s not and then she seeks him out and tells him it is. Make your flamin’ mind up, woman! Gary disappointed me mightily when he told Nicola she would need to get an abortion. Nicola, quite rightly, chucked him out.
And finally this week the wonderful Gemma used her flirting app to find a fella t the bar of the Rover Return. But while Gemma’s in the ladies loo at the Rovers, the lad calls his mate on his phone and says derogatory things about Gemma, things that Peter Barlow overhears. In a beautifully done scene, Peter tells Gemma not to bother with the lad and then chucks him out of the pub. More of this kind of thing, Corrie. Please.
And that’s just about that for this week.

Great review FN! Thanks a bunch, for a minute there I thought that I had missed an episode or two..what with the Kabin, the flat and Nozza's retirement..and..I had completely forgotten about Colin. His contracts only for a couple of months, so I expect he'll be gone soon enough.
You touched on something that I've written about myself. Knowing the characters, investing in them...growing fond, caring for them. That was the beauty of old Corrie, hence all of the wonderful tributes for Liz Dawn recently, not to mention the petition to keep Rita around!
Just finished watching the old episode where Annie Walker gets a new carpet with her monogram on it....terrific viewing, hilarious and believable. Now if we could get to know and care about any of the new characters as well as we knew the infamous Annie Walker...that would be something! Cheers!
Didn't Rita sell the Kabin to Norris years back? I seem to remember him moaning about his life and she made him partner? Did I hallucinate all that or are the writers sloppy?
I also remember Rita selling the Kabin to Norris and he kept the 'Kabin' name out of respect to her.
I am very disappointed that the writers have a nssty character like Colin remaining on the Street and worse in a central location like the Kabin. As for Rita and Gemma where are they going to live now?
Sinead has become a disappointing character.
She knew that she would have to help look after Joseph but suddenly finds it 'difficult' to look after the little guy?
Or is the reason Sinead is resentful is because Joseph would take her away from sneaking around with Daniel or is it because she regrets aborting Daniel's baby?
If you did then I share your hallucination. As far as I know Norris owns the Kabin and probably Emily's house. I'm not sure about the latter because Emily seemed to have sold to him to teach him a lesson about how expensive it was to run a house,so he may have given it back at some point.
Sinead's behavior is also disappointing because when she first started to date Chesney she presented herself as better than Katy because she wanted to help him take care of Joseph when his mother kept dropping him off on the days when she was supposed to take care of him.
I think Chesney only let Katy leave with Joseph because Sinead had that accident and he wasn't sure he could look after both of them.
Sinead now belongs with Daniel so if she wants to leave she may as well do it before Joseph gets attached to her.
To my knowledge, Rita sold Norris the entire Kabin, and he owns it outright. She is his employee, who carries her weight like she still owns the place, because Norris adores and respects her.
Rita owns her own flat, but we never found out about any divorce settlement or deed entitlements for Dennis Tanner.
Norris owns Emily's house, and Emily is a tenant for life, basically. she deeded the home to him, as she was fearful of his retirement, should Emily die and the house be taken away from him. And yes, she also did it to prove a point that being a homeowner is not all that easy and comes with bills and worries.
Those are my impressions. And I don't recall any scenes or storylines that indicate otherwise ;)
Norris bought the cabin with his inheritance from Ramsey. There was a scene where he very proudly painted his name as proprietor.
The Windass clan continues to sap the life out of everyone they encounter. Roberts new do is yummy, as is Yasmeen’s; David’s, well, not to my taste but if it makes him happy... I am concerned about Craig and his new digital clock fugues. It seems strange for him to develop OCD at his age. I hope they don’t give him a personality transplant. Or schizophrenia. Did Adam let some decency slip out?
I'm curious: did Seb always have those deep red lips or is that recent?
Great blog. 100% agree with it and also with the comments. It must be a writer's joke that people in the Rovers discuss their private business regardless of who's listening. Mind you, I was glad to see a bit of the old Peter throwing Gemma's date out. Guess it was Sarah who called the police and how quickly they arrived! Presumably, they know if the call comes from a Corrie resident, it has to take top priority.
@ Where's Emily: I think we cared about the old characters because mainly they were on the Street before us. They invited us to look on, so to speak. These days, we have all these new gate-crashers we didn't invite to the party. Who are these people and what are they doing in my living room? Very hard to care about Shona, Nicola, even Seb. Seb's HIV is very confusing; whose story is it? Is it about how a young person deals with the condition? More likely, it's linked to Anna's exit story. While Seb's staying with Sally and Tim, perhaps he remembers Phelan coming into the hospital. Eventually, Rosie will casually mention that Phelan came into the solicitor's office and that will put the wind up him.
As for Robert's new hair color, if Corrie cared to explain it, they could just have Robert explain that he had been coloring his hair black & now that he's in prison he can't get access to hair dye so had to let it go back to silvery gray.
I thought Rita had sold a share of the Kabin to Norris. And thought Norris rented from Emily. But up to a couple of years ago I had missed a few years so anything could have happened.
So was if Phelan who pushed Seb’s ladder or was it a genuine accident.
Originally by Rita Sullivan (Barbara Knox) as the Korner Kabin on Rosamund Street, it moved to its current location in 1990. In late 2009, Rita sells The Kabin to employee Norris Cole (Malcolm Hebden) so that she can go travelling. When she returns, she is re-employed by Norris and is currently second in command.

2013 to present - Norris Cole
Emily signed the house over to her lodger Norris Cole on the condition that she continued to live there. Although she didn't take any money from him, Emily was glad to be rid of the stresses of home ownership.
I did know that Rita sold the Kabin to Norris.
My complaint is that we never saw Norris sell it to Colin, or Rita sell her glat to Colin either.
I thought that although Norris took ownership of the Kabin, Rita kept the flat. You're right about the story being rushed and ridiculous. I'm sure that Adam and Todd are going to get it back for her.
Genuine accident. He reached over for something, them list balance and fell
I never explain when I change my hair colour, so why should he? Other members of the cast haven't explained their hair colour change in recent time eg Eva and Sinead
I thought that business with Colin rushing Adam to the hospital was to get Rita’s signature on the flat sale contract in case she died. If she signed then, could it be shown she was under duress or perhaps not competent due to the tumor, and have the contract nullified? And if Adam was Colin’s lawyer, can he change sides to help Rita?
I think some of you are being a bit harsh on Sinead. She has no experience of looking after a child so to have to look after a grieving bewildered 5 (?) year old is really daunting. She is also probably thinking what her own child would have been like at this age.
