Corrie weekly update – If you have been affected by these issues...

Corrie weekly updates from 1995
All the wit and warmth of Weatherfield
None of the waffle

Available from amazon.co.uk or amazon.com

This week on Corrie one of the episodes opened with the announcer telling us that it “may contain scenes which viewers might find upsetting” and it ended with “if you’ve been affected by any of these issues…”

Whatever happened to sitting back, relaxing, enjoying and soaking up a soap? Sigh.

Another week with too many hospital scenes. Carla, Aidan and Nicola were all in hospital this week. Carla received Aidan’s kidney and in return she told Johnny she’s going to give him her shares of the factory.  Nicola was also wired up to a machine this week in the Weatherfield Ward after complications with her appendix and bowel. Enough, please Corrie. Too many “dramatic” hospital scenes lose any impact they’re supposed to have and fans are losing the will to care.

However, it’s not all been as dismal. There were some lovely scenes in the hospital when Roy went to kiss Carla goodbye as she was wheeled into the operating theatre and instead of planting a kiss on her cheek, Carla turned her head so that Roy had to kiss her full on the lips. And while Carla was under the knife in surgery, Roy and Johnny bonded over their shared love of her too. A nice touch, I thought.

And at Nicola’s bedside, Phelan sat with tears in his eyes and told Nicola he didn’t want anything to do with her any more after he found out that she’s been harbouring Seb in her flat. He’s a complicated chap, Pat, as all of the best soap villains are.

Elsewhere this week, Billy’s junkie brother Lee turns up with methadone for Billy’s pain. Billy sweats his way through the week, lying to his friends and being a rubbish dad to Summer who is failing at school because of the carer role she’s forced into at home.   When Sarah sees Lee she’s terrified as he was the one who kidnapped her last time he was on the Street. David takes it upon himself to protect his sister and with the help of his new (and only) mate Josh, the two lads bundle Lee into the back of a van and give him a kicking. It’s a nasty storyline this one and it’s going to get darker too.

Meanwhile, with all the focus on the Connor clan this week and their kidney swap storyline, poor Jenny has been feeling left out after Johnny puts his kids first and her second. Jenny walks out of the flat feeling rejected and over a shared couple of cans of beer with Kev Webster, he helps her get a bit of perspective on what’s going on. This was a lovely scene between two old friends, more please.

Steve’s called on to act as referee between his mum and Eileen after they go head to head in a slanging match about Pat Phelan. Liz only wants to warn Eileen against the man she’s married to but Eileen won’t hear a bad word said against him and the two women fight in the pub.

And that’s just about that for this week.

This week little Hope and Ruby are forefront of the action after their trampoline burns down in the back yard at Fiz and Tyrone’s house. But after Fiz and Tyrone had left the girls home alone while they’re drinking in the pub, worse things could have happened, much worse.  A lighter is found amongst Ruby’s possssions, did she burn down the trampoline?  Tyrone says his daughter wouldn’t do anything like that, but Fiz is not so sure. Is Ruby a chip off the old block from her mum crazy Kirsty? Or was it Hope who set the trampoline on fire, her dad’s serial killer genes coming through?  Or maybe it was the gang of kids hanging around outside the Kabin that we saw one minute and then they were gone. One thing’s for sure, things are tense in the Fiz and Tyrone household as each blame the other for something that their girls haven’t done.

Over at the Bistro, Robert admits to Michelle that he’s skint, having gambled all their cash at the casino. Michelle takes it on herself to do something about this and forces Bistro customers to cough up for their meals in cash only. Then she fakes a break-in at the Bistro, stealing all the cash from the till. But inside the Bistro, unbeknown to Michelle, are Kate and Rana having a snog.  Kate sees the “thief” and bangs a bottle of wine over Michelle’s head.   Kate and Rana run out of the Bistro but when Kate spies Michelle later on the Street dressed head to foot in black, she realises Michelle has robbed her own business.  Michelle does a deal with Kate that if she doesn’t tell anyone that she was the thief then she’ll keep quiet about her and Rana.

Speaking of Rana, her brother Imran returned this week with a smarmy look on his face. I’m not a fan of Imran so far but I’m hoping that will change.  His marriage is falling apart after a fling he’s had with another woman.  Imran and his sister Rana are both adulterers then.  I hope Yasmeen chucks them both out.

Elsewhere, Daniel and Chesney continue to fight over Sinead, which doesn’t make any sense at all as she’s the most annoying young woman in soap.  Chesney hits himself with a brick to pretend that Daniel’s assaulted him. He also feigns food poisoning, saying that Daniel served him dodgy food in the Bistro. None of which is true, of course, but all of it masterminded by Tracy –“I burned myself on the arm with an iron so that everyone would feel sorry for me and think Charlie Stubbs had done it” Barlow.

Leanne returns this week from an extended break with her mum Stella. She signs up to a dating app, sadly not the same one that Liz and Steve have joined – WhamBam – and whoever dreamed that name up is a genius. Leanne also tells Eva she wants to move out of her flat and into one of her own.  Eva’s got more on her mind when Aidan mopes around the Rovers blaming her for ruining his life, forgetting that he was the one having the fling with Maria.

THIS WEEK’S HOSPITAL SCENE: Anna after she suffers a reaction to her anxiety pills in prison. Then she does a runner, all the way back to Roy’s flat where she reunite with Faye and Gary. There’s a wonderful scene with Faye when she dumps boyfriend Seb after she finds out the truth about Phelan and her mum. But it’s a truth that Seb isn’t ready to hear as he admires Pat Phelan so much.

And finally this week, Bethany agrees to a date with Craig after Audrey tells her that Craig reminds her of her Alfeh.

And that’s just about that for this week.

Corrie weekly update - Kabin Fever

Corrie weekly updates from 1995
All the wit and warmth of Weatherfield
None of the waffle

Available from
amazon.co.uk or amazon.com

Sally wins against Kirk to be crowned Mayor of Weatherfield this week - and even Kirk votes for her. But during the campaign, Beth hires a fancy dress outfit so that she can be the flower to Kirkeh’s Buzzer Bee.  Which seems a wasteful thing to spend her money on when she’s out of work and skint. But what do I know? Seems I’m out of step with all things Corrie right now and so I’ll apologise now if this week’s update contains scenes of WTF? ETC.

Anyway, Beth goes to the fancy dress shop to return the outfit and pretends she’s never worn it. She wants a full refund but the shopkeeper can tell it’s been worn because it’s covered in food stains, and also because Beth’s picture is in the paper alongside Kirk where she’s wearing the outfit too. An altercation ensues and the cops are called. In comes PC Craig Tinker threatening to arrest his own mum.  Poor Craig though, his obsession with timing and detail is threatening to derail him as his obsessive behaviour takes hold.

Elsewhere this week, the Kabin was sold. See, I told you I was out of step with Corrie because the last thing I remember about this was Rita lying in her hospital bed and Colin brought in the papers for her to sign to sell her flat to.him. We never saw her sign them. We never saw Norris sell the Kabin to him either. Neither were mentioned again apart from a throwaway comment on Wednesday night. But somehow Colin now owns the Kabin and the flat. Norris has a retirement party in the Rovers and Rita is homeless as Colin’s bought her flat too.

Never in all my Corrie-watching years has a storyline moved on so quickly, so ridiculously, so thoughtlessly and with such little regard to us fans. We’re supposed to care about the programme but ITV are making it hard for us to do so when it feels like it’s being thrown together right now. Add to the mix this week that there were at least two fluffed lines (one from Gary Windass and one from Queen Rita herself) that went unchanged. It really, really saddens me to see Corrie like this.

The good news however is that Rita is given the all-clear from her brain tumour. It was benign - and a nation raised its glass to HRH Reet of the Lady Tanner.

Michelle goes to visit Robert in prison and despite the fact that his appearance has changed completely and he’s gone silver grey instead of Captain Scarlet black, she gives it scant mention.  Also changed appearance completely this week is David Platt who invites Shona to live with them all.  David and his new beard and moustache were not commented on once. Come on, Corrie. You know you can do better that this. You’ve had 57 years practice.

Anna gets arrested for pushing Seb off his ladder and wanting the lad dead. She didn’t do it, of course, it’s Phelan’s plan to frame her after he plants one of her ear-rings inside Barlow’s solicitor office. The Corrie comedy coppers arrest her anyway and Anna’s as bitter as you’d expect. Well, you would be too. But there’s worse news for Seb when he’s diagnosed as HIV positive. Faye has a test too and she is free of the virus but Seb now has to come to terms with a life on medication.
Chesney returns from Portugal with son Joseph in tow, who doesn’t say a word, not a word. The lad’s grieving for his mum and having a hard time fitting back into life in the rain and cold of Weatherfield.  Chesney dumps Joseph on an uncaring Sinead while he sorts out a school place for his son. And if that wasn’t bad enough, he then tells Sinead she can look after Joseph while Ches is at work.  Sinead isn’t best pleased.

Gary finds out that Nicola’s pregnant and goes to confront her, asking her if the baby’s his. She says it’s not and then she seeks him out and tells him it is. Make your flamin’ mind up, woman! Gary disappointed me mightily when he told Nicola she would need to get an abortion. Nicola, quite rightly, chucked him out.

And finally this week the wonderful Gemma used her flirting app to find a fella t the bar of the Rover Return. But while Gemma’s in the ladies loo at the Rovers, the lad calls his mate on his phone and says derogatory things about Gemma, things that Peter Barlow overhears.  In a beautifully done scene, Peter tells Gemma not to bother with the lad and then chucks him out of the pub. More of this kind of thing, Corrie.  Please.

And that’s just about that for this week.

Corrie weekly update - Conviction, Crowdfunding and the Zambesi Club

Corrie weekly updates from 1995All the wit and warmth of WeatherfieldNone of the waffleAvailable from amazon.co.uk or amazon.com

Bethany’s grooming storyline reached its end this week with the conviction of Nathan and bent copper Neil. But it didn’t end without drama when Mel wormed her way into Bethany’s trust and tried to attack her to keep her from getting to court and testifying against Nathan.  And after the court case ended, Gary gave Sarah tickets to Milan for her and Bethany to get away. Meanwhile, back at home after the trial, Craig confides in mum Beth that he’s in love with Bethany.

Anna continues to play good Samaritan this week helping Seb cope at home with his younger siblings and drug-addict mum. But both Seb and Anna keep all of this secret from Faye.

As Underworld has been forced to close after the break in, the girls and Sean are without work and skint. They decide to set up a crowdfunding page to see if they can raise cash for Fiz to start a business knitting hats for children with cancer.  As the idea was inspired from Hope’s own battle with cancer, Beth adds a picture of Hope and her cancer story to pull at heartstrings and raise more cash. Fiz is furious when she finds out what Beth has gone and done but calms down when Beth shows her how much money is coming in.

Eva’s not in the good books of the Underworld girls as they continue to blame her for losing their jobs. But she’s soon cheered up by Adam Barlow who goes in for a snog.

Meanwhile Daniel proves he’s a chip off the old block by enjoying sub-duvet activity with his editor at the Weatherfield Gazette. She encourages him to go after Phelan on a story about the Calcutta Flats development. Phelan, however, is less keen on having newshound Daniel on his case and follows Daniel to a care home where he finds out that’s where his old business pal Vinny’s mam is living.

Phelan continues to keep Andy alive in the basement of the house he’s supposed to be renovating. Andy tries to commit suicide, even going so far as to write Steph a farewell note, but he can’t do the deed in the end. But Andy might just be the least of Phelan’s problems once Daniel starts digging for the truth.

Rita goes through with her operation to remove the brain tumour. Norris, Jenny and Gemma are by her side when she goes in and her girls are there when she wakes up. We don’t yet know if the tumour is malignant or benign, so further drama may ensue. There was a lovely scene before Rita went into hospital, between her and Norris as he reflected on what might have been between them both had they met earlier in life.

Elsewhere this week, Shona’s ex Dane, who is Clayton’s dad, comes calling on the cobbles wanting a share of Shona’s scratch card winnings. It’s fair to say that she’s not best pleased to see him.

And that’s just about that for this week.

Corrie weekly update - Rita, Helene and Philosophical Phelan

Corrie weekly updates from 1995
All the wit and warmth of Weatherfield
None of the waffle

Available from
amazon.co.uk or amazon.com

Rita finally relents towards Gemma, realises she got it wrong about her breaking into the Kabin and the two of them make friends. Rita even has a word with Rosie Webster to get her to help Gemma get the dreadful duo of Zoe and Roxy off her back too.  So, Gemma and Rita are mates again and all is well with the world.  That is, until Rita sets a place at the dinner table for Len and Gemma’s in tears wondering what to do. She confides in Rosie about Rita’s memory loss and admits she’s in over her head with it all. Heartbreaking stuff indeed.

After her win on the scratch card last week, Shona invests all the cash in a bond for her son Clayton for when he’s released from jail. And who does she turn to, to help set up the bond for her? Why, our new local solicitor’s practice of course where Todd does the necessary.  Shona scratches another itch when she and David get mucky on the floor at Roy’s Rolls. I just hope Roy can get the stains out of the lino.

Over at the Bistro, a review in the local paper calls Robert by the wrong name of Nick, which is understandable as the place is still called Nick’s Bistro. Robert decides to do the place up and give it a new name, enlisting the help of Will to help design it.

Sally’s annoyed with Gina when she finds a box of bric a brac at Dev’s shop that Gina told her she’d sold to help pay off her debts. Further lying to her sister, Gina says she’s clearing her debts but applies for a loan online. Meanwhile, Sally finds out that the Mayor of Weatherfield has handed in his notice and she decides to apply for the job.

Gary returns from Ukraine this week and he’s been beaten black and blue. But as his injuries are under his t-shirt and he and Sarah have no time to do what David and Shona did, us fans are the only one who knows the awful truth about how dangerous his job is out there.  Worse is to come when he’s offered another job there and decides to take it, leaving both Sarah and Izzy fuming at him for deserting them again.

Jenny hires posh Helene to design her bridesmaid dresses for her and Eva’s joint wedding, which she absolutely loves. Less keen are the bridesmaids themselves – Gemma, Kate and Maria who detest the gravy-coloured frocks.  Jenny, however, won’t be swayed.  There’s a bit of a moment when absent-minded Rita knocks a cup of coffee onto the wedding shoes as the girls are having their dress fitting but Gemma does the decent thing and takes the blame herself.  However,  Jenny isn’t ready to forgive Gemma or befriend her, as she thinks she’s pulling the wool over Rita’s eyes about the break in at the Kabin.  And so when Gemma needs someone to talk to about Rita’s memory loss, she can’t bring herself to confide in Jenny although she desperately tries.

And finally this week over at Roy’s Rolls, Yasmeen and Nicola have a chat about Pat Phelan with Yasmeen knowing that Nicola’s Phelan’s daughter. Yasmeen tells Nicola not to trust Pat, that he’s a wrong ‘un with money and deserves a wide berth.  Phelan has still got Andy locked up in the cellar of a big house in the middle of nowhere and Andy’s in a bad state with an injured arm. Will Pat help him out or will be continue to sit by Andy’s bedside getting philosophical?  A rum do indeed.
And that’s just about that for this week.

Corrie weekly update - Babies, Beige and Teenage Girls

Corrie weekly updates from 1995
All the wit and warmth of Weatherfield, none of the waffle

Available from
amazon.co.uk or amazon.com

Toyah Laverne Battersby might have her name above the door at the Rovers Return, but a Rovers landlady she is not. Not to this fan, anyway. Don’t get me wrong, I love Toyah, I always have and I’m invested in her character but she’s not a natural behind the bar, not where her mind is on hormones not hotpots, babies not booze. When the last round of IVF treatment fails, she can’t bring herself to tell Peter and goes to the clinic alone. Once there, the consultant tells Toyah that she isn’t prepared to put her through any more IVF treatment as there’s little hope that Toyah’s body is built to create. Meanwhile back at the pub, Toyah has to cope with babies everywhere as Leanne’s moved in with Oliver and Sarah calls in with Harry in her arms.

Ousted Rovers landlady Liz struggles in her new job at the medical centre where the manager, Moira (or as Steve calls her “Moo-ra, the snarling beast of Coronation Street”) makes life hell for her. Liz is like a fish out of water, dealing with patients instead of punters and the transition from being Queen Bee of the Rovers to receptionist for ill people isn’t easy. But she’s determined not to give in, and stands up to Moo-ra’s nasty quips about the way she works, the way she talks and, even, gulp, the way she dresses. “Could you wear something beige?” Moo-ra asks Liz. Beige? It’s not even in Liz’s vocabulary, never mind her wardrobe.

Elsewhere this week, Norris and Mary find out that they’ve won through to the next round of the Mr & Mrs competition Norris has entered them into. There’s only one problem, the competition organisers want to see photos of them both at various stages of their relationship through the years. Cue lots of dressing up and posing for pics on the Street with Bethany as make-up artist and Craig as photographer. It’s all good fun and Mary decides to take matters firmly into her own hands and proposes to Norris – for real. Dressed in her Christmas outfit, she gets down on one knee in Dev’s kitchen to pop the question and Norris accepts with a smile. Lovely stuff.

Gail’s not best pleased to be handing over a cheque this week. It’s a cheque from Nick to Leanne for her share of the sale of the flat and it’s a big fat cheque for twenty five grand. Leanne offers the money to Toyah and Peter to pay for their next round of IVF treatment but it doesn’t look like this will be going ahead, not now.

Over at the Bistro, Michelle gives Chesney a box of chocs and a wad of cash by way of saying sorry for him getting stabbed the other week and ending up in hospital. Adam “Better Call Saul” Barlow is on the case, tells Chesney to sue Michelle and Robert and promises he’ll win the case for him. But there’s more for Michelle and Robert to worry about than Chesney’s compo-claim. Someone firebombs the Bistro, writes RIP in red paint on the wall, breaks into Robert’s flat and beats Robert up after he spends a night in the casino. Robert knows that drug dealer Rich is behind all of this but he’s got no proof and the cops can’t do anything, not yet.

Fiz starts doing a course in antiques this week. I’m not really sure where this is going other than to remind us that she was also doing a course in massage a little while ago but that’s been forgotten. As has Zeedan’s new business ‘Speed Dahl’ with his van.

Another cracking story this week has been Summer moving in with Billy and Todd into the flat above the florist, which Tracy owns.  Summer’s grandmother is against Summer moving in to live with Billy, she calls him as many horrible names as you’d expect a homophobe to do. But Summer’s grandfather Angus has the final word. “I denied my son in life but I will not deny him in death!” he declares and allows Summer to go and live with Billy, which is what Drew wanted in his will. Now, Billy and Todd have a daughter living with them. “Are we out of our depth?” they ask each other on the sofa. “Oh, yes,” the nation replied.   Amy has a run in with Summer when Tracy barges into the flat to offer advice on how to handle teenage girls to Todd. It’s Amy who comes off worse, when Summer hits her. It’s going to be interesting to see how this all pans out and Summer is a wonderful addition to the show.

And that’s just about that for this week.
