Guest blog post: Why Steve and Leanne's baby doesn't make sense

Our Coronation Street fan of the week this week is Deena from New Zealand.  She's also very kindly written a guest blog post for us as she believes that Steve and Leanne's baby just doesn't make sense.

And so, it's over to Deena. You can follow her on twitter @QueenAliKingx

"Steve and Leanne have barely ever interacted on the street and suddenly they do, but only to get it on? When the spoiler first came out about it, I honestly thought they were having a laugh! Steve is married to Michelle, and he just went off at her for KISSING Will. Now he has gone and got a woman he barely interacts with, pregnant.

Leanne getting pregnant is a shock full stop, seeing as back in 2011 she was basically told she wouldn't be able to have a baby of her own, but what do you know, here she is having Steve McDonald's baby. I think it would've been a lot more believable if Leanne had slept with Robert, seeing as the chemistry between them has been quite high. Even Zeedan would've been more believable than Steve.

To make things even worse for Steve, Michelle gets pregnant as well, so he will go from having 1 child (Amy), to 3 in a matter of months. For me personally I can definitely see Steve and Michelle with a baby of their own, and it would've been great to see that occur without the high expectation of Michelle about to find out about Steve’s other child, that Leanne will be carrying for 9 months.

Obviously Michelle is going to find out because when does a storyline ever go smoothly in soap? That's right, never. No doubt Michelle will find out either just before or after her baby is born and then want nothing more to do with Steve, but then you never know, a miracle may occur and she forgives him for knocking up Leanne Battersby.

I also can’t understand the fact Leanne and Nick get back together, and they pretend the baby is theirs. The fact they reunite is a shock to me, seeing as they have had two failed marriages. Clearly it’s not going to work a third time either. A few days after Carla left, he was sniffing around his ex wife, which yeah maybe, just maybe, a few months after her departure but not a few days!  Nick claimed to have loved Carla and in his words “It’s the best thing I've ever done, marrying Carla”. They were even going to try for a baby, but no no, he is now, only a couple of months after his and Carla's split, going to pretend that his ex wife’s baby is in fact his own.

To me this whole story isn't right. From Steve being Leanne's baby daddy, to Nick and Leanne getting back together. I just hope Peter returning will cause a rift between them and we get a repeat of 2010 where Peter and Leanne are a couple. I also hope, Michelle and Steve can work through things when all is revealed.

This story I’m sure will be acted out amazingly by all involved, but to me, it’s just not believable.

Deena, your feelings are shared by everyone, I should think. Bits of the storyline might work but throwing a whole bunch of random strands into the pot definitely doesn't. Possibly Robert & Leanne/Tracy; Leanne & Robert/Nick; Leanne & Peter/Nick - but no triangle with Steve. I like the idea of Leanne having a baby but not sure who the best father would be for a happier ending.

From a grandmother's point of view, I would hate it if one of my sons got someone pregnant, and I knew about it, but was never allowed to acknowledge it. How Liz would ever keep quiet about it is beyond me.

The storyline is absolutely crazy, as everyone - apart from the writers/producers/whoever is responsible - knows.

All I could think of when I saw how this storyline was going to play out was the movie "Micki and Maude". It gave me a huge headache and I'm afraid this is too.

I didn't know Peter is coming back. I agree with people who are saying that this whole storyline of Leanne's pregnancy is unbelievable. Soaps are supposed to be a bit unbelievable to an extent but this is over the line.

You think this is ludicrous? Wait until it's 6 episodes per week..just think of what the writers come up with to fill in the time. Anything goes. Toss ideas in a bin, toss it around and pick one out. Sounds good to me.

The Steve/Leanne story is totally unbelievable. They have been friends since their teens, and this being a soap, all kinds of bad things have happened in their lives yet they never jumped in bed. It doesn't ring true.

Please no Leanne and Peter. He is horrible and the Leanne that is a feisty, independent woman would not put up with his past behaviour and run back to him. He has used her too many times.

I would love Nick and Leanne to make it work and this to be Nick's baby. They could be a great corrie couple.

Yes!! This entire storyline is ludicrous. It could have been just as sensational to have her pregnant with Zeedan's baby for several reasons. Steve impregnating someone he's not married to has been done at least twice. Boring and stupid. Also, Steve and Michelle have had a long run of front burner storylines. Leanne and Steve sleeping together makes no sense. The writers were really grasping with this one.

Agree with all except Peter and Leanne - that's been done to death and back. I hope Peter is thrown in to a completely new sphere of characters, that some of his comedy comes out more (he was good with Blanch) and they don't go over old ground with the drinking.

I really don't know what the writers were thinking making Steve the dad. It's already been said but they hardly interact and he just randomly turned up at her door and they jump into bed? Ridiculous

At the time Leanne was a huge support for Nick so it would have been more believable if those two had slept together, Isn't it funny though she pushed him away when trying to kiss her but jumps into bed with Steve. The other believable one would have been Robert.

Now all of a sudden Michelle wants a baby. And Steve will have two kids due around about the same time no doubt in fact I would put money on them coming on the same day!

It also annoys me that they can't seem to let Nick settle. Is there actually a reason for this? They seem against making him a dad which I don't quite understand. And now being the nice guy he is will bring up Leanne's baby and in the end he will get hurt because Steve will want to be there no matter how much he says he doesn't and then Peter will be back and Nick will be tossed aside like always when it comes to Leanne.

The oldest soap cliche in the book. Steve has form, having always gone off the rails when his current love has dumped him so this isn't anything new. That it's Leanne was a surprise even though they hinted at a newly baked friendship in the days leading up to it. They've known each other since they were teens but they never really have been friends. Leanne's been lonely since Kal and had lent a sympathetic shoulder to Steve who thought he lost Michelle. Kind of like a life preserver to a drowning man. I do buy into it but not because i think it is a great storyline twist. I can just see how it happened. Steve is an idiot, and was a very upset one. Leanne was lonely. If she had to get pregnant it had to be with the person with whom it was going to cause the most drama. Robert? Nah. We'd already just come off several years of Tracy targeting Carla as her enemy. Rerun with Leanne? Dull. No drama there. Nick? ho hum. I never bought into them as a couple. As teens it was pure lust. As grown adults, LEanne was using Nick as a safety net and she still is though I do think for Nick, Leanne is the love of his life. IT's just not mutual.

I agree with previous posters about why this story is ridiculous. But the MOST ridiculous thing about this story is that Leanne, who at the best of times would be nearing the end of her child-bearing years, but who in this case has also been told that she probably couldn't have children - this woman gets pregnant after ONE romp in the bed. Please, please tell me this isn't Kate Oates' idea!

Its certainly not Oates plans since her episodes have recently started airing

It's not unbelievable that nick and leanne could make it work despite having been married and divorced twice already... look at dierdre and Ken. I do think the leanne having Steve's baby story is strange... would have made more sense for it to be Nicks and have Peter come back and try to cause problems.

I think leanne is only mid thirties... not really the end of child bearing years these days

According to Corriepedia, Leanne was born on 2 July 1981 so has only just turned 35. She's not right at the end of her child-bearing years, although she's obviously no Faye or Sarah-Lou!!

Could not agree more Deena. This storyline is beyond pathetic and an insult to our intelligence. Steve and Michelle are my favourite corrie couple of all time. Why can't they just be happy after everything they've been through? Seriously, what are the chances of during a man's lifetime, three one night stands get the respective women pregnant?! As others have rightly said Steve and Leanne have known each other for years and there's never been a spark between them. Yet when they are drunk and "In a bad place" they jump into bed. It's by far Blackburn's worst and most unrealistic storyline and that's saying something! The only thing that could make this worse and even more predictable is if Michelle loses her baby and Leanne's goes full-term. Whatever happened to Simon's football coach who Leanne fancied?! Bring him back as a love interest.

Funny that Faye's baby hasn't been mentioned in months - leaving me to wonder whether this whole sensationalised teenage pregnancy storyline is just going to be completely forgotten about, or whether, years down the line when Faye is more grown up and responsible, the baby's father will return and dump her on her. It does get a little frustrating that as soon as a storyline is done with it is dropped like a stone and never mentioned again, happens time and again in Corrie and is not very realistic in my opinion. I suppose we shall see.
