Win a carbon monoxide alarm from Gas Safe Register
Over the festive period Gas Safe Register worked with Coronation Street on Fiz Stape's carbon monoxide scare storyline.
On New Year’s Eve we saw Fiz cancel her afternoon with Tyrone as she was suffering with a headache, nausea and dizzy spells, which she put down to the flu. When on the phone to Tyrone later that day, she collapsed and lost consciousness. Something wasn’t right and it was clear that Fiz was suffering from more than the flu.
After being rushed to the hospital, doctors confirmed that Fiz had actually succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning from a boiler that had been illegally fixed by Tyrone the week before.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a highly poisonous substance produced by the incomplete burning of fuels such as gas and Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) or even solid fuels like wood or coal. It can happen when a gas appliance has been incorrectly fitted, badly repaired or poorly maintained. It can also occur if flues, chimneys or vents are blocked.
CO is an odourless gas with no taste so it can be hard to spot, Fiz could have been alerted to the presence of CO in her home if she had an audible CO alarm fitted. These can cost around £15 and can be purchased from any good DIY store, local supermarket or your energy supplier.
To support the storyline and help keep viewers safe in their home the Gas Safee Register has worked with CoGDEM (Council for Gas Detection and Environmental Monitoring) and through us here on the Coronation Street Blog are able to give away 50 audible carbon monoxide detectors.
For your chance to win one of these alarms simply sign up to the Gas Safe Register e-newsletter before 21st January. You will be contacted by Gas Safe Register by email if you are a winner.
