Why the hell would you tell Eva, she of the evil gob, an explosive secret? Especially when you know her track recor and how vindictive she can be.
"Stella however has no such regrets and tells Karl she’s glad he never read her text that night. Karl’s bemused."
I can not emphasise too much how until I read that, that my faith in Corrie had been severely dented; it didn't stop me from tuning in, but only when the fancy took me.
For soaps like Corrie to exist as 'successful' they must follow parable-like, even Aesop's Fables-like themes.
In soapland these are MUSTS; break them and you break loyal
viewers.(IMO).
If you have an affair - YOU WILL BE FOUND OUT!
If you have an abortion, without informing your partner - YOU WILL BE FOUND OUT!
If you have a covert addiction, and don't seek help - YOU WILL BE FOUND OUT!
If you commit an act of fraud, (emotional or financial) - YOU WILL BE FOUND OUT!
If you steal - YOU WILL BE FOUND OUT!
If you commit murder - YOU WILL BE FOUND OUT!
On that last one - that's why there's so much ire directed towards Tracy - we are being asked to accept that a Corrie charascter has got away with murder, virtually Scot-free!
That's one of the satisfying aspects of soaps - watching the 'what-goes-round-comes-round' comeuppance fall upon the errant character!
In real life people do 'get away' with committing those acts - but not in soapland, where a strong sense of justice and fair play must win out in the long run. Watching soaps I think, is a solace to what 'could be' - compared to the sometimes burden of the reality that some have to endure; or even engendering a feeling of 'others have it worse' than you.
- So when there was no comeuppance for Sunita's deceitful act of deleting Stella's text from Karl's phone without his knowledge and set about enticing Karl to have sex with the express desire for them to be caught in the act by Stella, and thus Sunita achieving all her aims without penalty, well, I was disappointed when the expected fireworks display failed to materialise with Karl failing to find out that his partner-in-crime, Sunita, engineered the demise of his relationship with Stella (with Karl's 'guilty' self-indulgent participation of course, he's no innocent).
So, the new producer couldn't possibly be having an effect already, it's too soon to see his hand. But that latent revelation above, that Karl is bemused (and thus signposting he will find out the truth - in the next episode) is a sign the 'rules' of soap storytelling have not been completely abandoned, and should restore my faith a little. But not entirely. There's still Owen.
Oh yes, Owen -
He set thugs upon jailhouse Jim, did he not? To get him out the way for a clear run at Liz. With Jim severely injured ending up in hospital, remember? Was Owen outed? NO! He just carried on without any comeuppance (apart from failing to land Liz) and I haven't forgotten that act of treachery; so for me, although Stella informing Karl of her text is a welcome development, until the new producer is well and truly planted in the hot seat, I'm still only an occasional Corrie viewer.
Danny-K: I agree with what you say but would add that soap law can be ignored for years if it fits the character. Mike Baldwin would ride rough-shod over anyone who got in his way without seeming to pay the price. He was eventually destroyed by Linda but that was a long time to wait for retribution (and only because Johnny Briggs was leaving). Play the long game with Owen. Violence is part of his character and he will get his come-uppance but only when it suits the storyline. With Tracy,Charlie's murder was gratuitous; she could have got her vengeance by having him arrested. Violence wasn't part of her character, she didn't pay for the crime and she hasn't changed as a result of that episode. Back to Karl and Sunita, the text business presumably leads into Sunita's exit and probably Karl's eventually.
I've always thought that Sunita's retribution came in the form of Karl: a "be careful what you wish for" sort of karmic justice. She did Stella an inadvertent favour.
As for Owen, I'm anticipating that his bullying tactics will eventually go too far and will ultimately cost him his relationships with the people he professes to love, either Anna or his daughters, or all of them. Tina and Tommy know what he's capable of, and Chesney and Gary have seen him in action, so it's only a matter of time. I'm hoping Jason is involved in whatever payback is doled out, since Owen has been so nasty to him. Yes, soap justice is satisfying, compared to the messiness of real life.
Remembering Owen's evil revenge on Eileen for 'borrowing' his money, I hope she gets a few kicks in when his time has come.
