Next Wednesday will be William Roache's 80th birthday. As we all know, he's been playing the role of Ken Barlow since 1960 and holds the Guinness Record for it.
In today's Manchester Evening News, there's a nice long salute to Mr. Roache with a little slideshow as well. In the recent weeks leading up to his milestone birthday, he's been touring Canada and has been instrumental in the headlines touting his "1000 women". That figure may or may not be true but it certainly sounds like he's got at least one thing in common with his character, Ken Barlow.
In the coming weeks he'll be busy with rehearsals for The Street of Dreams in addition to Corrie and will celebrate his birthday with the help of his castmates next week. Showing no signs of slowing down very much, he's still enjoying being Ken, and has no plans to stop!

Wow. 80. So if you figure he started having sex at 15, then really he only had 15 women a year to attain that 1000. Not so many when you look at that way. :-D

I went to see William Roache in Ottawa.I didn’t know what to expect. It was a very pleasant evening. He talked about his upbringing, his stint in the army and how he became an actor and landed the role of Ken. After intermission he took questions from the audience. He was charming, funny, and gracious. They had to throw us out of the theatre because the show went on longer than was planned. But it seemed he would have been happy to keep chatting with us all night. It’s truly hard to believe he will celebrate his 80th birthday. He carried himself like a man in his sixties.
Anyone see him on Piers Morgan? He came across as a decent bloke, looks fantastic for 80, has a loving family and has found love again after the sad premature death of his wife with a cracking girlfriend of 36! Good on him!
Truth be told, William Roache is not a brilliant actor but he does have terrific charm and is very well liked by people. I thought the sniping about his tales of his many female conquests was quite hilarious. He tells it like is and, for many people, Ken Barlow is Corrie. Happy Birthday, Bill!
