There's quite a good interview with Coronation Street actress Paula Lane in The Mirror. She talks a lot about her own background and how it's similar to that of her character, Kylie Turner. Paula's sister had a teenage pregnancy and her own mother was a single mum and struggled to keep her family together though her childhood was happier than Kylie's.
She also just missed out on playing David Platt's girlfriend, Zoe. But she's making up for it as spoilers say she'll be back and very likely walking down the aisle with David!
Paula seems very level headed and very determined to make a real go of acting.

She does nothing for me - just another unpleasant character. I'm really disapointed that she is coming back. I found it hard to stand her in short spells let alone a longer stint. There has been enough bitchiness since Tracy came back
I think she is played by a good actress but am bored by her shenanigans already. These characters should only come into it for a short time, like Tina, but the powers that be insist on making them permanent characters.
I think clumsy, plot-driven writing has boxed Kylie into a corner. My feeling, when Kylie resurfaces, is one of dread, because I want to see the Max-situation with the McDonalds bed down and become the norm before they disrupt it with a return of Mommie Dearest. Trouble is, at the moment, Kylie seems to be burning most of the McD's cash off in flights ping-ponging between Manchester & Ayia Napa. Corrie is always at it's best when it plays the long game ... (Mike Baldwin's progeny, or Emily's relationship with Ernest's murdered for example) Trouble is, as Paula has been cast, the writers seem inpelled to come up with storylines for her. Okay, so, the Platt wedding: seems arbitrary but - convince me!
