On 27th January 1961, Eileen Derbyshire first appeared as 'Ms. Nugent' - a shy helper at Glad Tidings Mission Hall. Who knew that 50 years later she'd be such a backbone to the street? Ms. Nugent did also appear in episode four, though she was played by a different actress.

Amen to that. She, like Ken, has been there since the beginning and seen great change. She must be worth a few bob now I should think. Unbelieveably, I don't think she's ever been rumoured for the chop in her long tenure - even Ken's escaped it at least three times!
Many congratulations to Eileen Derbyshire for half a century's sterling work!
Brilliant Character! Well done and Congratulations to Eileen Derbyshire. It would be nice to see the writers explore Emily's family again, In 50 years we haven't learnt much about her family, only Spider and Ernest's niece,Freda. I think Emily's sister Norah appeared a couple of times also, can someone tell me if I am right?
50 years in the same role is quite amazing really as it just doesn't happen in soaps anymore. Is it only me that thinks Emily was woefully underused in the tram crash episodes? She hasn't really had much in the way of screentime or stories for ages.
One of the most underused and underrated characters on the Street, and a lady of great dignity and self-respect in real life, or so it appears. Congrats to her.
If only ITV would commission a programme about her. She deserves one every bit a much as Betty Driver. I suppose the main problem is that Eileen is so reluctant to talk in public. Such a pity though as she hay played her character brilliantly over the years, and still manages to quietly steal scenes from many of the other actors in the show.
Anonymous:
Emily's sister Norah, played by Cynthia Michaelis appeared in 1961, 1971, 1972 and 1978 in six episodes in total. Pretty much forgotten nowadays is that Emily's father James Nugent appeared in Episodes 72 and 73 in August 1961 played by Frank Pettingell.
I love Emily and I agree a much underrated and underused character. A very gentle and humble person but I still remember her having the love affair with the Hungarian as Miss Nugent. Doesn;t do interviews I dont think, saw her after she got her MBE but she was talked over by "Rita".
She hasn't had a career like Betty Driver though.
Love Emily- she really embodies the kindhearted spirit of the programme and has great chemistry with other characters. I'm worried that Corrie is becoming more about nasty manipulative scumbags and plots that are staged just for the sake of ratings (eg tram crash). Without characters like Emily, Rita and Norris, Corrie would be dead.
Do we know who played Miss Nugent in episode 4, and are there any photos of this actor ?
