Julia Goulding interview: Will Shona become Mrs Platt?

How much does it mean for Gail to accept Shona into the Platts family?
It’s really warming for Shona to hear that. We don’t know much about Shona’s family background but I think this is the first real mother figure she has had so it means the world to her to hear that from Gail. It also means the world to me as an actor. I remember when we were filming it, I walk off and smile to myself and there was no acting required for that smile! Gail famously hates all of her son’s partners so I was secretly buzzing about it, especially as a Corrie fan. Gail likes me!

What goes through Shona’s mind when she hears that David may not be out of prison in time for the wedding?
Shona is fully aware that the wedding might not go ahead but she can’t even begin to think about that outcome because she has to stay positive as she is at breaking point. With what she’s been through with Max, coping with the kids on her own, still holding down a job, Gail disappearing, Sarah not really being around, David being in prison, Shona is hanging on by a thread and that thread is the hope of David getting out and everything going back to normal.

Everyone has been leaning on Shona, haven’t they? What will happen if David doesn’t get out in time for the wedding?
I know, Shona Big Shoulders! Who knows, it could drive Shona away from the street because she is at breaking point. I don’t know how much more she can take.

How would you describe Shona and David’s relationship at the moment?
I think on the surface they are trying to pretend that everything is okay but they both know that deep down there are problems. Shona is lying to David a lot, trying to get him through prison. But I do think they are good for each other.

What makes Shona beg Nick to bury the hatchet with David? How hard was that for Shona to do after her history with Nick?
As much as Shona detests Nick and thinks he is an idiot, she knows how much David needs him and needs that father figure. David needs his brother to rely on and be strong for him.

When David is refused bail, what are Shona’s first thoughts?
Shona is absolutely gutted; she is heartbroken because she fears that David is going to spiral. Being around Josh is opening up a load of old wounds for the both of them but she is not there to protect him and she was a major catalyst of getting David through that really dark time after David was raped. Not only is Shona at breaking point, she fears that David is as well.

What advice would you give to Shona right now?
She needs a holiday, gone are the days of the simplicity of working in Roy’s Rolls. I would advise her to talk to people to try and offload some of the burden on to Leanne or Sarah, find Gail, speak to Audrey, phone a friend.

“She needs a holiday”! Well, she’s having a year off pretty shortly, so any progress in her relationship with the tribe Platt will be well on hold. And I see Fizz is off again shortly too. No chance for Daniel and Bethany as she’s off for, surely, bigger and better things. Thank goodness Robert is actually being killed off, but can’t they add Peter and Gary and clear that trio of bad Actors off our Street forever?!

Peter, a bad actor? Give your head a shake. He is one of the best on telly.

I'll second Popcorn on that 'give your head a shake'! Chris Gascoyne is a great actor, and Peter one of my favorite characters.

I need to see him in something other than Corrie then. To me he just says ‘hey’ an awful, strokes his beard an awful lot, brandishes his hideous tattoos an awful lot and drinks too much orange juice!

Let m3 know when you think he’s showing acting brilliance and I’ll make a point of studying it!!

I saw Chris, and David Neilson at the Glasgow Cirizens’ Theatre, in their touring production of Samuel Beckett’s Endgame. They were both outstanding. He certainly showed ‘acting brilliance!
