Jack P Shepherd interview: David caught in prison riot

How did David feel to find himself alongside Josh in prison?

Quite scared actually, he thought he’d never see him again and it brings all that emotion back. But also quite angry that Josh is in here becasue he’s awaiting trial for raping someone else. David is also worried that his secret will get out to the other inmates and he’s not sure how the other prisoners will react to the fact that he was raped.

How does David feel as the riot breaks out? Does he sense an opportunity for revenge or does he just want to keep his head down?

Before the riot kicks off David is due to be getting out in a few weeks so he just wants to keep his head down, but then at the same time he befriends these inmates called Abe and Tez and they get it out of him that he was raped by Josh. They say he needs teaching a lesson and he should do him in. They say they’re going to stage a riot and that will be David’s chance because you can get away with anything in a riot, there’ll be no witnesses and they’ll bring Josh to him. David’s left pondering it and I think he is swept up in their plan no matter how much he knows he should just be keeping his head down.

Do things change when Abe gives him the scissors?

Yes it does, the thought is there and when he’s presented with it I think he’s capable of anything.

Footage of the riot means David needs a solicitor, do we know what he’s done? What is David’s side of the story?

When filming the scenes I didn’t even know whether David had done it, the scripts didn’t give a clear indication and that made it interesting to play. As a viewer you won’t know whether he’s done it or not, David’s unpredictable and is capable of anything. David’s saying it wasn’t him, it was someone else, but he doesn’t know who.

Does Shona believe him or does it cause problems in their relationship?

She’s not sure, she knows David and she doesn’t know if she can believe him, yes David wants her support but he does understand why she might have doubts. All he can do is put across his side of the story but it doesn’t look good for David and no one knows if he’s telling the truth.

Shona’s been having a tough time at home, how aware is he of what Shona’s dealing with with Max?

She’s sugar coating what’s going on with Max for David, she’s saying he’s fine, he’s on the right track, David’s not sure but he accepts it. She just doesn’t want to stress him out further.
