New Street producer discusses Corrie cast culls and cameos

The new Coronation Street producer, Kate Oates, will be taking over at the helm of our favourite show later this spring.

Shas given a statement to The Daily Star.  In it, she dismisses tabloid rumours of cast culls and talks about celebrity cameos too.

Kate Oates tells The Star about celebrity Corrie cameos including those last year from Sarah Harding.

“I think the decisions to do cameo roles were based on storylines at the time. It paid off in that there was some press interest, which is always great. It can work sometimes and sometimes it does not. I didn’t do it on Emmerdale. What I liked to do was bring in unknown talent, my own cast. If you look at somebody like Michael Parr, who plays Ross Barton, he was an unknown when we brought him into Emmerdale and that’s really rewarding.”

When it was announced Kate Oates was moving from Emmerdale to Corrie, reports claimed she was set to kill off major characters.

But she says: “When I read that I laughed. I think the show has a great cast. I know a lot of them already and nobody has cause to be afraid. It’s going to be fine. There is always pressure in a role like this. Whatever show you do, you have to make sure people know they can trust you and you’re open to their thoughts and input. It’s important everyone knows their input is important. One of the challenges of this job is you have to be creative to order and work at a pace.”

Every single time there's been a new producer since the Brian Park car crash, killing off Derek Wilton, the press have wheeled out the exact same story about the new boss getting rid of the long time cast and them all being scared of the chop. Oh and there will be one on one interviews with all of them. I think they use the same text and just change the name of the producer. Tedious. Sure, a new producer is going to change things around and there may be layoffs of characters that aren't working with the vision that the producers have but unless a senior cast member wants to retire, it's unlikely they'll "kill them off". I think the backlash over Derek Wilton was a bit of a nightmare.

Park was only following through what his predecessor had decided about Derek Wilton he of course carried the can in the press for what happened

Park could have changed his mind, though, and had Derek survive the heart attack.

I like what she said about bringing on lesser known actors. A lot of the time the cameos they have on don't mean anything to fans over here anyway.

Hopefully the end of Les De... Michael then. Utterly pointless miserable character.

Since there seem to be no cast culls for the moment,I hope this means that the same rectangle of familys,Barlows,Connors,Platts and Websters won't be dominating storylines and that finally other families will be feautured?
