Pride of Britain bus visits Coronation Street
Coronation Street became Nomination Street as the Daily Mirror's Pride of Britain tour rolled into Weatherfield. Stars took a break from filming the soap to hop aboard the coach and nominate their unsung heroes.
Catherine Tyldesley said: “Pride of Britain is such a fantastic night. There are so many people worthy of these Awards but I would like to nominate the team at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital who work tirelessly throughout the year to help so many children. The question you should be asking, is who should you nominate.
Helen Worth, 63, who has played Corrie’s Gail for 40 years, said: “I remember being at the very first Awards. It’s wonderful to be supporting Pride of Britain which is now in its 16th year. It’s been great to see it grow year by year and all the wonderful people that take part. People who wake up in the morning like us but go to bed heroes because by some act of bravery or selflessness their whole lives have altered in one day. It’s amazing to be able to support the best of Britain.”
Les Dennis, 60, who plays Michael Rodwell, said: “I love Pride of Britain, and every year it raises a tear, certainly from me. My nomination is for a guy I met recently called Billy McPhail. He was the guy who jumped down onto the train track and saved a woman who had fallen. There is a song, Billy Don’t Be a Hero, well he was and he is my nominee for 2014.”
Simon Gregson, 39, who plays Steve McDonald, praised the Caudwell Children charity and Mikey North, 27, who plays Gary Windass, highlighted the work of the volunteers of the Royal British Legion with our service men and women.
