Hilda Ogden actress Jean Alexander rushed to hospital

Tabloid press are reporting this morning that the actress Jean Alexander who played Hilda Ogden on Coronation Street has been rushed to hospital.

The Manchester Evening News reports that Jean, 88, who played Street icon Hilda Ogden for 23 years, was taken in an ambulance after the health scare.

The actress, who also appeared in Last of the Summer Wine, was kept in for a number of days but has since been allowed to leave by medics.

Confusingly, The Mirror have a headline online today to say that Jean has passed away, but the link to the story about her death in The Mirror didn't work. The Mirror have now apologised on twitter for any distress caused by their false information:

Hope she gets better soon! I was shocked when I saw she'd passed away! What a mistake eh? She's one of the last Corrie legends of yesteryear. :)

The irrepressible and lovely Hilda Ogden played to perfection by a wonderful actress Jean Alexander. I've forgotten that she's 88 years old and that she hasn't been on the show for a very long time. Still, she reminds us of a time when a TV show could tell stories set within the poor and the working class in an interesting, compelling fashion.

All the best to Jean Alexander and her alter ego Hilda Ogden.

Wishing Ms. Alexander a quick recovery.

Jean Alexander's "Hilda" is one of the first, if not THE first characters that comes to mind when I think of, IMO, 'the best days' of Coronation Street.

Hilda was a wonderful character, very believable, and I appreciate her character, especially these days, much more than I did then.

Those stalwart actors of decades past, although not numerous by today's standard, laid the foundation that allowed C.S. to still be around today.

All the very best to Jean Alexander.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Jean Alexander. Hilda is/was a universal character. I grew up in the south, and knew many chirpy cockney women exactly the same as Hilda apart from the accent. She lives on so much so that at the weekend I was playing Scrabble and insisted 'mural' had an 'i' in it.
