Big story for Roy Cropper as he visits his dad's grave

There looks to be a big story brewing for the Croppers this year.

Sadly, we already know that Hayley Cropper will be leaving Coronation Street in a few months' time, but a teaser in today's fab Inside Soap magazine leads me to believe we might be seeing more of Roy's family on screen.

Inside Soap have a paparazzi picture of Roy and Hayley laying flowers on the grave of Roy's dad, St. John (pronounced Sinjin, I wonder?).  The mag says that the gravestone reads that Roy's dad passed away earlier this year, in February, so Roy has missed out on any chance of a reunion.

Interestingly, Roy is mentioned on the gravestone as one of St. John's children but also mentioned are Roy's half-siblings in the inscription which reads: 'Father to Jonathan, Stephen, Isabelle and Royston'.

A Coronation Street insider told Inside Soap: "Roy has a lot of thinking to do - this is a whole side of his family he has no relationship with. It's a big step to make contact. Is Roy ready?"

Now then, what do we know about Roy's dad, Corrie fans?  Can anyone remember if Roy or Sylvia have mentioned him before, I'm sure they must have done.

With thanks to an anoymous commenter via Corrie.net - we know this: "Roy appears to have had an unhappy childhood. His father, a french polisher, walked out on his mother when he was 10, and didn't get in touch for 8 years. He had sold the family car, cashed in insurances and started a new life in New Zealand. The young Roy took this very badly, and even though his mother and father have both re-married he still feels deeply about it. Roy hated his stepfather and left eventually home to fend for himself."

According to Corrie.Net,

"Roy appears to have had an unhappy childhood. His father, a french polisher, walked out on his mother when he was 10, and didn't get in touch for 8 years. He had sold the family car, cashed in insurances and started a new life in New Zealand. Re-writers changing history again... Although I'm no expert, I don't recall either Roy or Sylvia mentioning his father or step-father. Can anyone ever recall that? Have I missed or forgotten?

I think Sylvia called Roy to let him know his step-father had passed last year. Roy showed no emotion as his step-father was very mean to him. Sylvia showed up at Roy's and read him the riot act..Haley then followed Sylvia to the rooming house and insisted that she come back and live with her and Roy...from what I recall. Maybe I missed a few steps along the way.

I recall mention of his step-father and that they didn't get along, but I don't remember his real father ever being mentioned. I don't know where Corrie.Net got their background information.

Brilliant news!! (-:

As much as I enjoy the 'blockbuster' stories, Corrie really excels when it slows the pace down and concentrates on the complexities and intricacies of human relationships which we can all relate to.

David Neilson is such an accomplished actor at playing Roy and is always a joy to watch, especially alongside his two main female co-stars. Really looking forward to them exploring more of his back story.

Anonymous - if the info is on corrie.net - and it is - then it's correct, I know that for sure :-) Even if Corrie "forget" that about Roy, it was true at the time it was mentioned.

Oh they missed a trick with casting Timothy West - he could've been St. John Cropper!

Llifon, he certainly could have, he looked enough like David Neilson to be related. The Corrie.net info would have been gleaned from something that Roy probably told Hayley at one point back in the beginning.

Yay ! More Royston is always brilliant news.

Sounds to me that, before this tidbit, we had only ever heard mention of Roy's stepfather. I think that they picked the age 10 so that Roy would remember the break up of his parents' marriage and feel abandoned when his step-father left little to be desired.

We don't know how much younger Roy's siblings are except that they are at least over a decade younger. They could be the same age as Sean and Jason or they could have kids Craig's (or even Sinead's) age.

Roy is nervous about meeting them because he is a bit - different - which means that they may think the same thing - especially with him being so much older than they are and whether he would be interested in knowing them. They will probably have their own secrets which they are reluctant to share.

That lollypop guy with the brownies seems to have taken a fancy to Sylvia.
