Coronation Street's Michael le Vell charged with 19 child sex offences

Michael Le Vell, who plays Coronation Street's Kevin Webster is accused of 19 child sex offences including raping a child, indecently assaulting a child and sexual activity with a child. He is due to appear at Manchester magistrates' court on February 27.

Stories about this are all over the press today and we're linking to the story at the Manchester Evening News.

Michael Le Vell (real name Michael Turner) from Hale, Cheshire was arrested in September 2011 over an accusation of a historic sex assault. At the time he strenuously denied the allegations and vowed to do 'everything in his power' to clear his name.

The case was dropped in January when the Crown Prosecution Service decided there was 'insufficient evidence' to take the matter to court. But last night, detectives confirmed that charges had been brought relating to the same matter.

A GMP spokesman said: “Michael Turner has been charged with 19 offences including raping a child, indecently assaulting a child and sexual activity with a child. He is due to appear at Manchester magistrates’ on Wednesday, 27 February 2013.

The spokesman said the charges were authorised by the CPS following a review of evidence.
Mr Le Vell trained at Oldham Theatre Workshop.
