Bill Tarmey memorial statue to be built

Out of the Manchester Evening News today we hear of a new mission to raise money for a new copper statue of late actor Bill Tarmey. The statue is apparently going to be erected outside Granada Studios in Manchester and the fundraising for it has begun among the cast and crew.

Bill of course, played beloved Jack Duckworth on Corrie since 1979. His first appearance was at the wedding of Gail and Brian Tilsley. He left Corrie partly due to health reasons and partly because his son was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Jack died on screen shortly before the show's 50th anniversary and Bill passed away in November.

It will be a lovely tribute but I do wonder if they'll leave it outside Granada or take it with them when they make the move to the BBC Media City in the Salford Quays.

Does anyone know if the Granada building has listed status? Perhaps that's why the statue is being erected there?

Yes, it has listed status - and this may be planned for the new square where the news car park is situated currently - but as the land is being leased I would have thought the news owners would have to approve this.
This sounds more like 'hoping to do' rather than 'is going to happen'.

Wouldn't it be great for them to be build loads of statues to other deceased members of the cast? Like Violet Carson, Doris Speed, Pat Phoenix, Margot Bryant, Jack Howarth, Bernard Youens, Bryan Mosley, Betty Driver. You know, those iconic characters. What does everybody else think?

That would be lovely but the sheer expense of that many statues would prove impractical. I would love it if the Bill Tarmey statue also included Liz Dawn though, as I don't think you can really have one without the other.

How about holograms of the 1960's stars hovering about at Piccadilly Station, directing you to the shops and attractions? Or beam up images of them on major buildings in Manchester?

Great! Ghosts! Surely the fact that you can call up virtually any episode on Youtube, or buy DVDs of any of the 52 years is tribute enough?

What about just the heads instead of whole bodies...cheaper and you could have all the past icons of Corrie.

They could do a "muriel" on the wall, and include all the above. That would be great!
