Curly and Reg to return for Corrie's 50th

News reports today suggest that Reg Holdsworth and Curly Watts are returning to Coronation Street for a 50th special DVD to go on sale this Christmas.

I love both these characters so if this story is true, this is one Corrie fan who'll be very happy. However, I know Reg Holdsworth isn't everyone's cup of tea...

Reg was certainly never my cup of tea. as a comic character, I never found him in the least bit funny. But if they brought him back and then killed him off, I'd settle for that.

The DVD seems official, Ken and Kev have been quoted talking about it

Yes. The Reg Holdsworth character always seemed to me as if it had escaped from some down market sketch show, an unfunny one at that. No wit, no depth, a one-dimensional cartoon-like apparition. The character jarred the viewer on every occasion. No disrespect to the actor but the character was a complete misconception for Corrie IMO.

Curly on the other hand was pure Corrie.

I expect it will be well up to the standard of all the other spin-off DVDs.... in other words, dire. And I somehow doubt I'll be picking this one up even when it hits the bargain bins.

Reg may have been comical back in his time in the 80s but he must be knocking on a bit, and Curley is middle aged now so I cannot see how these two will appeal to today's audiences and fear they will be more embarrasing than amusing.

As much as i love Curly and would love to see him again, i'm not sure about this spinoff. I would far rather see Curly come to the Street for a visit with his old mate Kevin.

Although I liked Reg a lot when he was around (I can take or leave Curly) I don't really think they should make a return either on the Street or on a DVD. They were great characters but in the past.

I quite liked both these characters at the time (although didn't like the Raquel/Curly carry on - cringe) but I'm very dubious about this spin-off. Why are they doing it? like Tvor I'd far rather see Curly come back with his telescope and visit Kevin or be Freshco area manager or something.

Although I enjoyed Curly in the early years, I wasn't sorry to see him move on when he did.

Same with Reg.
He was a pretentious character, reminded me of a Vaudevillian somehow, but the actor was good at it.
Don't think it'd work with today's viewers.
I'm not into 'spin-offs'; never have seen one better than the original.
Someone must think there's a market for it though.

Mixed feelings about this. Curly, perhaps more than any other character from the past, is one I'd like to see return to Corrie proper, having split up from Emma. (Do I mean Emma? Is that her name?) Would have been good for the 50th imo. I don't think Reg would fit in these days, but this spin-off DVD *might* be good fun I suppose.
