Coronation Street episode review, Fri 4 May 2018
Quite a mixture of stories tonight covering a number of subjects but very focused around children as we shall see.
The main event of course is Toyah bringing baby Susie back to the Street and introducing her to the extended family and friends and we see her in Peter's arms above. Toyah finds the photos Eva had taken of her and the baby together in the hospital but leaves them with Eva, who breaks down in tears when she is on her own, as Toyah heads back to Weatherfield. Toyah also reports to everyone that Eva will not be returning to the Street. Peter asks Toyah to marry him and more champagne is needed to celebrate the engagement - Leanne seems downcast by this but puts on a sunny face for her sister. Simon, who has worn a very black expression throughout the episodes, knows something is going on and tells Leanne about the rental. Toyah explains to Leanne she rented the house for a former client who was in an abusive relationship - but the story is difficult to swallow.
Jenny has been finding all the baby talk very difficult and this has led Johnny to wonder if perhaps she has found solace elsewhere as she keeps avoiding him. After consulting with Liz, Johnny presses Jenny for answers and she explains. It is the anniversary of the tragic death of her son and she takes Johnny to a beautiful garden (seen above) where the ashes were spread and she tells him that she wanted to get away from Weatherfield before the anniversary came round again which was why she was upset at the constant delays, after all Johnny cannot imagine the impact of losing a child - which he acknowledges; although his family is important he now understands why Jenny and he have to go to Spain and indeed are largely packed. Sally Matthews was superb as she recounted the pain of losing a child - as she says it never leaves you and I do know.
Elsewhere we continue to see Aidan in a strange mood. He lends his credit card to Maria so that she can take Summer shopping for an outfit for a party whilst he looks after Liam with an outing to the Red Rec for some footy followed by a kebab. Liam really likes Aidan's watch - a present from Eva - and Maria later finds the watch in Liam's pocket; Liam assures Maria that Aidan gave him the watch as a present. Summer is grateful for the outfit - Aidan is repaying her recent help in saving the factory a lot of money when she spotted an error in Alya's spreadsheet. Maria has some nice shoes as well. Aidan has dug out Eva's engagement ring and tells Maria that he feels Eva should have it. Aidan looks at the ring and has a big lump in his throat (pictured above) - regrets?
Jude and Angie are sleeping separately and she offers to fill in his cv - which given the recent storyline seems perverse - how does she know what he has done - all she knows is that he is not a marine biologist. Adam appears and says he has some clients who need book-keepers and Angie has even more work to do (apparently all in Adam's office). It is also Adam's thirtieth birthday today so celebrations in the Rovers; these are confused by Mary being there and then arriving through the door! Mary speaks to Norris who offers Jude a temporary job in the Kabin to tide him over until he gets something more suitable. Training includes how to deal with teenagers in the shop!
Craig does rubbish in his interview but he gets the permanent police job, surprise, surprise. Bethany seems upset that he now merely seems to see her as a friend - and perhaps she would like more?
Shona has words with David telling him that whatever is wrong with him it is wrong to drag a young girl into it. Imran visits and tells David he will probably do time when his case comes to court, a lot will depend on Gary's victim statement (which given the years of argument between the two of them is unlikely to be positive). Imran advises a guilty plea and David needs to think about the children so we see him phoning Becky and leaving a message asking if she is able to look after Max and Lily for a while.
Aidan pops into the Bistro, picks up a bottle of red to drink on his own and Johnny says they have a bright future to enjoy, Aidan wishes his father and Jenny a good evening. As he walks back along the Street he meets Peter, Toyah and Susie and so is able to observe that she is a lovely baby. He is really pleased for both of them. The closing shot is of a very pensive looking Aidan.
Tonight was written by Susan Oudot and directed by Peter Rose.

Musical ambience. Playing on the Jukebox in the Rovers when Peter held baby Susie for the first time. I can't stand losing you by The Police. It'll all end in tears
Why is Leanne downcast I wonder...finding it odd that Peters marrying her sister or unforgotten feelings?! Hmm
No. She'd just found out from Simon that he thought Toyah was having an affair
