If the rumours are true our Rita is about to put up her life savings to help Tina pay her legal fees in her battle to keep baby Jake/Joe. I know Rita is a kindly soul. I know Rita cares about Tina. Really though?! I just can't believe Rita Tanner would put her security on the line in this way.
The bond between Rita and Tina is obviously strong, although I can't quite remember how it came about. I just think a woman in Rita's position would do best to concentrate on a happy life and marriage with the lovely Dennis. With all this Tina stuff going on, Dennis is yet again like a background character which I think is a terrible waste.
I also wonder just how much money Rita has. I know she inherited a lot from Len when he died, but she seems to be absolutely rolling in it. I remember her bank rolling the Webster family in the past so I guess she does have form. There is also the whole baby issue. Going back a long way, we know Rita really wanted children of her own, but sadly it wasn't to be. Is she just trying to help Tina achieve something she herself could not?
At the moment we are seeing Rita trying to make Tina see sense, but if she goes ahead and puts all her money into helping her fight this, she'll go down a few notches in my estimation. What she needs is a good talking to from Norris, Emily and Dennis!
So what do you think? Is Rita right in supporting Tina as she has been?

She sees her like a daughter, Tina is a good, kind, strong person and she obviously appreciates that. I love their relationship and it's typical Rita to use her savings in this way.
I'm not keen on Dennis at all!
Tina is a brat. The baby is not even hers, she has not right to try to keep the boy. The baby belongs to Izzy and Gary. I will lose all respect for Rita if she helps the bratty cow to try to keep the baby. Rita must have a touch of dementia to do this.
It's nice that Rita offers Tina a home, but quite unrealistic that she would cough up her life savings.
The law is outrageous of it sides with the surrogate mother. Remember Rita's disgust when Tommy first told her McIntyre was going to carry the baby? I don't believe Rita would do an about turn so quickly.
Regarding Rita's money, how much is "a lot" when it comes to Len Fairclough's bequest? We're talking 1983 prices, when Fairclough died, and he was only a backstreet builder, not Taylor Woodrow!
Let's hope McIntyre's exit from the show is her being locked up for child kidnap.
On a separate matter, has anyone else noticed much more northern Anna is when she's angry?!
Tina's "good and kind"? Sure, she's demonstrating that is spades at the moment...
How can you not like Mr Tanner, Mr Dawson?!
Rita's initial reaction to Tina's announcement...."have you totally taken leave of your senses" & "That baby is not yours to keep", shows that she knows what Tina is doing is wrong.
I don't know why she's taken Tina under her wing. Maybe she just felt sorry for her in the past with all the trouble she's been through & figured she hasn't got anyone else to look out for her...who knows, but we all know Rita will stick by her even though she thinks she's wrong. I think Rita is wrong in doing so.
If Tina can't be persuaded to do the right thing then I hope it turns out that her & Tommy are the real parents, even as far as soaps go, I really don't want to keep watching the angst if he really is Gary & Izzy's and Tina won't hand him over.

Because every young girl is Rita's daughter apparently.
Funny how she never paid to help her friend Bet Lynch but seems to want to cough up money left right and centre for everyone else.
And is Dennis Tanner going to have anything else to do instead of following Rita around all the time? Such a crying shame that they are just wasting him.
Didn't Norris buy the Kabin from her for a tidy sum? She went on a cruise for a while and spent some of the cash. Ramsay left Norris the cash, he bought Rita out. Also, I'm sure she must've made a bit from th'insurance after th'tram crash!
Rita also inherited a load from Ted Sullivan and the sale of her part of the Kabin topped her up.
I can see Rita befriending Tina when she lost her Dad and apparently the mother who must be on a slow boat to China - you never hear Tina mention her. What I can't see is Rita forking over her 'life savings' to help Tina in the supposed upcoming legal battle to keep Jake/Joe. As you said Rita did tell her the baby was Gary and Izzy's, not hers even though she carried it. Has Tina thought about when the child is older and assuming they still live in Weatherfield, finds out his biologic parents are right across the street - Rita should put those 'life savings' in trust for the wee lad for his future psychological counselling. Take a tough stance Rita - don't give in!
Tina does not deserve Rita's loyalty. She did not listen to Rita when she decided to be a surrogate,,,,she knew best... lol. Both Rita and Stella told her she could not carry a baby to term without getting attached.
Now once again Tina knows best...lol. I don't like Izzy. She is unforgiving and nasty and a know it all. At least Tina shows genuine concern for the baby's well being. So since this is only a soap....I am on tina's side with rita! lol
Rita's always seen herself in Tina, ever since she started working at the Kabin. Plus the fact that Tina's storyline has some involvement from Rita, so we get to see her often - more than any of the other OAPs and I can't complain.
Rita is of a generation where a sense of community still existed. You help out others not related to you by blood because they need help. Both Tina and Rita have no family, hence she feels protective and motherly. I think it admirable that Rita has not let her personal beliefs stop her from helping. Just as with a son or daughter, you may not like their choices but you don't want to see them suffer either.
Rita was in search of a child, Tina needed a parent. They worked together at the Kabin and, during the Graeme/Xin thing, didn't Tina actually live with Rita? They're an odd match, but they go together well.
That said, Rita, you don't throw money at your adult offspring's misadventures. You talk sense into them. And Tina's behavior can be very easily explained by post-partum hormonal changes. Someone, please make Tina see sense so this hideous story comes to an end.
Newfy Pearl I must say you have a weird outlook on life and people! NO-ONE is more spitful and unforgiving than TINA! How can you say that Tina has genuine concern for the baby and Izzy doesn't. Perhaps she would have been able to show it more if that selfish little cow Tina let her near him. Izzy has more right than anyone to be upset and angry, she's had to watch another women carry her baby, she then finds out her boyfriend made a pass at Tina and then Tina tells her she's not handing the baby over!! How Tina has the brass neck to judge who's relationship isn't suitable for a baby to be raised a part of - has she looked at her relationship record?! She been through half the blokes on the street!
Rita wants her head testing for always defending the self centred little madam! She even nearly got Rita killed by a drug dealer on her wedding day!! I get that she has to mother people and Tina has no family to speak of but COME ON - GET A GRIP! Enabling Tina with cash for this parenthood charade is NOT helping her!
If Rita needed proof of just what an idiotic and selfish loud mouth bint Tina is, well it was right in front of her in Wednesday's ep when she couldn't understand why Owen was turfing her out of HIS flat, and then had the nerve to ask IZZY to tell her dad to reconsider after what she's done to her! How more deluded and self involved can she get?!
I for one am glad that Anna is getting hers. She was so horrible to Joe McIntyre - refusing to pay for the kitchen he installed which sent him on a downward spiral. Anna is a witch of the highest order. Owen is a dirt-bag too and don't forget what a bad seed Gary was (and a nutter to boot).
I really hope Tina will not win the baby, UGH.
I have a question, as the dad wouldn't Gary still have rights to the kid?
well I wasent going to post anymore but I just had to . I love rita but wish she would stop flashing her cash all the time she used to do it with sally .smarten up the baby is garys and izzy not tina so rita please for once mind your own business and stay out of it .she shouldn't be throwing her cash to pay for tinas legal fees .she don't deserve baby jake so rita back of dennis be a man tell her to butt out
To those wondering about the legalities, and Gary's rights, although the legal position is complicated it boils down to: he doesn't have any, unless Tina wants him to. Same goes for Izzy. Legally, the mother of a baby in the UK is the person who gave birth to that baby. Genetics are not a factor. The legal father of the baby is the partner of the woman who gave birth to it, if she's married or elects to give that right to an unmarried partner. If the mother withholds parental rights from her partner, the baby will have no legal father.
Although surrogacy agreements are not enforceable by law (so any forthcoming court case will be "interesting", from the point of view of Corrie getting it right), the only way Izzy and/or Gary can gain parental rights to Jake is if Tina signs those rights over to them.
I dont know what Rita sees in the shrewish selfish Tina either, in fact the way she fawns around her is slightly unnatural for somebody who is not even related or a friend of the family. She used to throw money at the Webster family as well until Sally had a row with her and nastily accused her of trying to buy them. Just like Owen who was the voice of reason at the beginning over the surrogacy, the writers are now giving Rita a total 180deg turn with Tina totally totally unreasonably re-negging on her deal and wanting to keep the bearbear. To me Rita sticks her oar in far too much.
I liked this storyline best when Tina switched her mercenary motives to genuinely wanting to help out Izzy and Gary. Her about-face leaves a nasty taste.
I know the writers want more mileage out of this story, but wouldn't it have been more enjoyable if Tina had willingly handed the baby over, acknowledging how difficult it was, and we then explored the dynamics of this unusual, extended family unit.
I agree with Cathy's post above. Couldn't have said it better! :-)
~JB in Canada
As much as Gary and Izzy are getting on my nerves, I still think they should have the baby handed over to them. I can understand that Tina has bonded with the child, but what she is doing is unbelievably cruel.
Anna is really grating at the moment though!
Thanks for the legalities info Digger. WOW, men don't stand a chance do they? I cannot imagine having someone else bring up my biologic child without my consent. How heartbreaking that must be for the biologic parents.
I get your point Llifon, but I'd still rather see Rita in stories of her own.
Oh yes. I do wish they'd explore Rita and Dennis' marriage as well.
I think the Rita/Tina combo is one of the best things about Corrie, and I totally get what they see in each other.
Bev
Izzy had no problem with banning Gary from seeing his child because of a clumsy pass he made at Tina. She did not mind screaming the place down right next to the infant's incubator.
If you think this was signs that Izzy will be a good person to hand Jake/Joe over to then I am gobsmacked. As this is not real but a soap story - I am just going with the writer's flow.....Team Tina! lol
BTW...Aunt Katy will not be much of a help. She is already pawning little Josesph off on Anna most of the time.
There is nothing preventing Izzy having her own baby. Daddy has paid for everything in her life and just cos she suffered the pain of a miscarriage she wont try again. Well lots of women have suffered miscarriages and worse, myself included and put ourselves through the agony in future pregnancy. We did not try and buy a baby. There are lots of babies born with egg and sperm donation and everyone is not jumping up and down saying the parents who bore them and nurtured them are not their real parents. Surrogacy for a loved one sister etc, is a lovely act. Buying a woman's woman is exploitation. Only rich woman can do this not poor ones. Science has allowed babies who are born not to be genetically the children of the mother. But nature is more important, nature is telling Tina she is the mother. Tina is the mother
Well said. Nature is more important than science and money. Tina is behaving as nature intended and is showing throughout her guilt in having hurt princess Izzy. The Windass are a horrible clan only in it for themselves. Owen threatened Fayes father for only turning up and Anna does not recognise his biological rights - but different now. Owen pays his financially destitute employee to have his spoilt daughters baby, cos she cant bear another pregnancy. In victorian times he would have just got her pregant himself and be done. That is exploitation. Thank god British law recognises the rights of the birth mother and not the one who can afford to pay.
Hope the law starts coming into force. Six months jail sentence for Owen for illegally evicting Tina. Jail sentences for Anna for assault and harrassment and entering Tina's home and illegally touching and removing her possessions. Jail sentence for Gary for harrassment and seeing this so called wonderful new father has already served time for assault, robbery etc. they would really throw away the key. As for Izzy have your own baby.
