2. Blanche Hunt 1974-1978, 1981, 1996-2009 (202 votes)
Missing
out on the top spot is a Corrie legend. Blanche was the street’s battleaxe for
a decade, following the footsteps of the likes of Maud Grimes, Ivy Tilsley and
the original battleaxe Ena Sharples.
Mother to Deirdre, Blanche first appeared
to plan her daughter’s wedding to Billy Walker and found a nemesis in his
mother Annie. There was no wedding and Blanche stuck around to run the corner
shop until bookie Dave Smith whisked her away. She made sporadic appearances
between 1976 and 1999 before becoming a Street fixture.
The acid tongued
pensioner enjoyed gossiping and found an ally in Norris Cole, but it was
ridiculing son in law Ken and daughter Deirdre that made her a much loved
character. As well as Dave Smith, she dated Steve Bassett, Archie Shuttleworth
and Wally Bannister. While holidaying in Portugal, Blanche passed away. But
Blanche provided humorous scenes beyond the grave at her will reading.
Among the classic Blanchisms are her one liners,
her condemnation of the Royal Mail and her triumphant scene in the AA meeting!

I'm shocked Blanche didn't win! I wouldn't put her first but she has the universal appeal and is still fresh in the memory. Who is left?
I loved Blanche, she had such great lines.
I hope you'll give us the full countdown list tomorrow, showing everyones positions and the number of votes they received.
So... does this mean Stape is number one?
blanche was fab, both early blanche (pre-1996) and later blanche (post-1996). Very deserving of her spot!
