Samia Longchambon interview: Maria pregnant but who's the dad?

Gary and Maria start looking at flats and he gives her the keys to a flash new car. Is Maria naive or does she know deep down that Gary is up to something dodgy but she is deciding to turn a blind eye?
She is naive. She feels like it’s a bit strange that everyone is warning her off Gary but she dismisses it as Sarah being jealous and Ali being jealous. She judges Gary on how he treats her and he is being really sweet with her. Gary definitely knows how to work Maria.

Does the fact that everyone is against them being in a relationship push them together even more?
Yes, she does feel a bit like them and us. Maria says that everyone is treating them like piranhas and Gary says, “It’s actually pariahs.”

What’s Maria’s first thoughts when she finds out she is pregnant?
She does really like Gary. Obviously she has known him for years and he is a single dad, she is a single mum so they’ve got a lot in common in that sense and he is being really sweet to her. Ali dumped her and it may have started off as a bit of a rebound but the more she sees in Gary the more she does really like him. But I do think she still has feelings for Ali deep down as well. She is throwing herself into this relationship with Gary to try and make it work because she knows that Ali is in a bit of a mess so Gary seems like the safe bet… which couldn’t be further from the truth!

How deep are her feelings for Ali?
It wasn’t her decision to end the relationship and she is still puzzled as to why it all ended so suddenly when he had just told her that he loved her. She knows that Ali still has feelings for her so there is still some unfinished business there. But she’s trying to ignore those feelings, she is not trying to play a game.

What’s Ali’s reaction when he finds out that Maria is pregnant with Gary’s baby?
Maria thinks he is jealous. He mentions about getting rid of the baby and she is shocked that he would really go that far just because he is jealous. She can’t see past that. But when he confronts her with all this new information about Gary being a loan shark, she can’t help but believe Ali.

Tell us what happens when Big Garth turns up in Weatherfield
Maria is suspicious when Big Garth tells her that her bag is not a fake because Gary told her it wasn’t a real bag. She then questions Gary on how he got the money for all these things but as soon as she does Gary has got answers for her and tries to talk her round again.

Do you think if Ali hadn’t have dumped Maria they would have had a happily ever after?
Well, we are talking about Maria! The chances of that happening are very slim but I do think they would have been very happy together. I do think it was working.

What was it like filming the episodes leading up to Christmas?
It was actually really nice doing night-shoots because it made it all feel completely different. It does get you into the Christmas spirit at first but when you have been filming it for three weeks everyone is like, “Right, Christmas - we’ve been there, done that!” I think I got off quite lightly, Mikey North did the majority of the work but it looked amazing and from what everyone has said about the other Christmas scenes, it was really good.

What’s been your highlight from filming the Christmas scenes?
I think the storyline as a whole and how it’s all unfolding because there’s so many twists and turns. There is not one particular moment that I can pick because I love working with Mikey North and I am really enjoying doing the scenes when it’s just Gary and Maria and we are getting our teeth in to it. I also love this new Sarah vs Maria storyline and we’ve got lots more stuff coming up as well. Everything as a whole has been really fun and exciting.

What advice would you give to Maria this Christmas?
I think Maria should just give up love! She’s tried it so many times with different guys that I think she is best just being on her own for a little while. But when it all goes wrong it’s great for me to play so it’s a lot more fun for me!
