Why it's time for Emily to be killed off in Coronation Street

It's been two years since Emily Bishop moved from Coronation Street to Peru. Two years.  And last night she was given a brief, but important mention in the Rovers Return.

Ken told Sophie that he knew Emily was back in the country, tending to her niece Freda who wasn't well.

Why mention this, I wonder? And why did Ken tell Sophie and not Norris or Rita?

Could it be that Eileen Derbyshire is really going to reprise her role as Emily in the show? I reckon not.  I think the line from Ken was just to keep Emily in our thoughts, as if they would ever go away.

However, it is high time, I feel, for Emily to be killed off - and here's why.

I would love to see her back, even briefly, but it seems unlikely to happen. I think they're just placing her back 'in the country' so she can die offscreen but still have a funeral service in Weatherfield. i expect all will be revealed shortly...

Clearly I hope Eileen Derbyshire does return to the show full time, but if she isn't (and it's looking increasingly unlikely), then I'd much rather have her retire to the seaside. I understand that sometimes it's necessary to kill off a character when the actor leaves suddenly or dies, but Emily doesn't have any real ties to the Street, and a happy ending would be so much better for a favourite character than a soppy on-screen funeral.

Yes I caught that mention last night. I wondered if something's gone on behind the scenes - either Eileen Derbyshire gearing up to return or deciding to retire. To be honest, I'm expecting her to go the second route. I agree with Fluttershy though, it'd be nice to have Emily retire to the seaside, and Eileen Derbyshire could even return for a couple of episodes to play that out if she's up for it.

The fact that Freda was mentioned makes me suppose that Emily will decide off-screen to move in permanently with her niece. At some point in the future, Ken will get a letter from Freda to say that Emily's died.

If Emily came back where would she live - we've got irritating Jude and Angie living in her house. I thought they were looking for their own place, having said that what do they live on, they don't seem to be gainfully employed. I don't understand why they were brought back into the show, I really wish they would move back to South Africa.

Oh I totally agree Anon 13:09, not enjoying their storylines at all.

Back to Emily, I think it's fairly obvious she's never coming back. Just kill her off already!

In the current climate not only will she killed off but, riddled with a fashionable disease, tortured and revealed to have plotted to kill Earnest all those years ago.

I would imagine that Norris and Rita probably already know of Emily's current whereabouts as they have been in contact with her via email or chat according to things Norris has said over the past couple of years.

I would love for Rita, Mary and Norris to be off screen right now because they went to see Emily in WhereFridalivesville. Sophie got Ken’s news because they were church friends and she was there. Emily could easily be killed off by catching whatever Frida has, if that’s what they want, but I’d prefer she came back, even just to collect her last few things and tie up loose ends. And give Norris a proper farewell, and by Norris, I mean us fans.

Emily was the moral compass for this street and as such it is now appropriate that she be killed off since what she stood for died a long time ago. The very fact that the producers do not see fit to give a proper send off to an icon, someone whose tenure was only surpassed by Ken Barlow, speaks volumes about the disrespect TPTB now have for this show and it loyal fans.

Let's just be happy if Frida doesn't come back.
