The Trouble with Tassels
In our house, we're divided over Tassels.
Yes, the Coronation Street lap dancing club has been topic of conversation for the last few, er, minutes. And now I'm not sure what to think or which way to swing my tassel blog post.
I was all set and ready to write a blog post saying that I liked Tassels. I was going to say that the fluffy name of Tassels and that of its madam, Lulu Lockett, somehow took the sting out of the fact that it was a club where a victim of sexual abuse at the hands of nasty Nathan was being further exploited, even if was by a woman with the best name in soap, ever, that of Lulu Lockett.
I mean, it's hardly a sexy sort of a place, is it? The punters are sleazy, beating up women and hanging around in pairs, leering. The dancers wriggle about in mahoosive hotpants as if they've got an itchy bum and need to scratch it, but can't.
I have to admit, I was dreading Bethany's lap dancing storyline. But the way it's being portrayed is sitting just about on the side of all right with me. It's soap, it's pre-watershed, and no matter how much we complain about it, it was still going to be shown.
Although I still wish it wasn't.
Anyway, on the other side of the sofa, himself has another point of view about Tassels which is this...
He isn't a fan of it - at all. He says that he's never been in one of these places (or so he says!) but it doesn't seem to him to represent the reality of them, and if it did, ITV would certainly not be able to show it pre-watershed at 7.30pm. And because there's no reality to it, he can't take it seriously. In addition, there may well be valid points to make in this storyline - why else run it? - but these points are being lost because of the sanitised way it is being presented.
So what do you think about Tassels, which way does your swing?

Been to few different strip clubs, looks like Tassel can pass as one of them. No problem from my end. :) Maybe a trip to a strip club or three could solve the problem for people who think it is not realistic?
Bethany's reasoning that she's the one in control is probably accurate amongst younger women starting out in the industry. There are some good articles on-line, written by ex-dancers, which show how quickly they get disillusioned. What's not clear in this storyline is how Bethany got the job as she's under-age. Fake ID? Also, dancers have to pay rent to the club and hopefully reimburse themselves with their takings. I don't think we' heard about that. Anyway, maybe this part of Bethany's journey is nearly over because I read that she gets the sack at the end of the month.
You are right about the pants, I have only seen the pictures as this has not aired in Canada, the "hot pants" look like an ugly girdle from the 60's. Maybe it's a fetish club for people who miss girdles.
I think the whole idea is silly and as I have said before I doubt very much that a real club would like the police hanging around to disrupt the other patrons - it makes no sense.
It doesn't seem seedy enough, I'll agree with him indoors. It's just being used to cause conflict between Bethany and Craig and her family once they find out because of course they will.
After reading your comments, have any of you, apart from the first commentor, been to a strip club??
Ive been to strip clubs that look like Tassels. It looks like a higher end gentlemens club. Of course you have the regular sorta skanky clubs... but I dont think thats the kind of look Corrie was trying to go for. I think too many people have this image of raunchy smokey place where sex goes on on every flat and not so flat surface, while the sweaty manager rubs his hands together and smiles. And dont forget the flickering neon sign of the female silhouette bending over.
