Martin Platt is returning to Coronation Street
ITV Coronation Street have confirmed this morning that actor Sean Wilson is returning to the show as Martin Platt, David's dad and one of Gail's many ex-husbands.
He'll be returning to the show in March for what ITV say will be "a short time". It is expected that his return will tie-in to David Platt's male rape storyline and Martin comes back for that when he finds out what has happened.
Since leaving Coronation Street, Sean Wilson has become an award-winning cheese maker. Oddly, I saw him on a telly advert on a minor channel on Sky TV this week and I thought to myself "Oh, so he's back in the acting game?" Seems like he really is.
This could be interesting...

That makes me very happy. I’m always slightly discomforted by the absence of characters who ought to visit at least occasionally. And I always had a soft spot for Martin.
This may come up seven times and counting ...
I'm so glad it's Sean Wilson who is returning as Martin Platt. He deserves a decent storyline, albeit a short one. I hope there's no hint of romance with Gail.
Huh. I honestly never thought it would happen. I'm glad though, Martin's presence has been needed for a long time. I always thought it was a mistake to write this character out.
As he supposedly lives in Liverpool, I thought it odd that Martin missed David’s wedding and Kylies funeral, and never visited Lily or Max, even if he had to swap out his head to do so. Other than that but with Katy, I liked Martin and will be happy to see him.
Jeanie (anon):
I always liked Martin too, thought he was a good dad to David and didn't deserve his summary exit! But his arrival now could seem a bit awkward, as it will sort of underline how absent he has been from his son's life. Eg.--wow, I have a four year-old grand-daughter! A 10 year old grandson! Etc.
If I'm not mistaken I've heard David mention from time to time over the years of going to visit his Dad. So he hasn't been completely out of the picture.
And Phelan will kill Martin thus Gail will have a perfect score of dead husbands.
YAY! I loved Martin Platt!! Will be very happy to see him back even if only a short while.
About time too! While we realize that actor availability and studio plans don't usually include former cast members, it's always rubbed me the wrong way when a long gone character who still has ties to the Street never appears during a crisis. Trains and roads run in two directions.
I have to say I loved his Northern Foods show. I'm certainly happy to see he is coming back, even for a short time. Hopefully, they won't turn him into an abusive psycho....like so many others on this show.
I vaguely remember that Sean Wilson left because he didn’t want to be associated with the pedo aspect of the Katy Harris story. Which, IMO, shows him to be a man of strong integrity and character.
actually - Martin has been in touch with David over the years...
Martin decides to move to Liverpool with his new girlfriend Robyn (Clare Calbraith). David is devastated when he hears that Martin is leaving and does not talk to Martin for a while; however, the two of them reconcile just before Martin leaves. Martin and Robyn drive off to Liverpool for their new life together. Robyn falls pregnant and gives birth to her and Martin's daughter.
In January 2006, David returned after visiting Martin and revealed that Martin and his girlfriend were expecting a baby.
Martin was supposed to return for Sarah's wedding to Jason Grimshaw in 2007 to give her away, however couldn't make it as his daughter was ill. David went to visit Martin in 2009 as he had enough of his mother Gail and her boyfriend Joe McIntyre and returned a couple of weeks later.
He was not in attendance at David's wedding to Kylie Turner in April 2011. By May 2015, Martin still had contact with his family.
In July 2015, David went to stay with Martin in order to take a break from problems at home, involving stepson Max's behavioural problems and also conflicts with Max's father Callum Logan. When he returned, he told Gail that Martin had bought a new house with a big garden and a posh kitchen and had received a promotion at work. Although Martin sent his love on to Gail, David pointedly told her that his dad had done really well in life since he had split from her.
After the killer of his wife Clayton Hibbs was sent down for her murder, David along with his step-son Max and daughter Lily went to see Martin in November 2016. (wikipedia)
HOPEFULLY HE KILLS PHELAN
While I agree it does seem weird for a major character to not pop back in during a major crisis, I'd almost rather have them not come back than recast the role to simply have the character present. In most cases the returning character doesn't have a major part in the story but is rather just kind of there. For me the excitement is seeing an actor in character that we loved before rather than the complete plausibility of the storyline. Hopefully the show can keep good relations with former cast members so that they are open to popping back up!
