Who's Maxine Peacock? Here's all you need to know

Last night on Coronation Street, Bethany and Craig were sitting on Maxine's Bench outside of Audrey's salon.  They wondered who the bench was dedicated to. Bethany dismissed Maxine's name saying something like: "She used to live around here. I think I've heard her name mentioned."

Well, to refresh Bethany's memory as well as anyone else who can't remember, or don't know, Maxine Peacock, here's her life in a nutshell.

She worked as a hairdresser in the salon.

She married Ashley Peacock.

She had an affair with her doctor, Matt Ramsden and gave birth to his son.

She really should have stayed at the party.

In 2003 she was killed by Richard Hillman.  Richard, you'll remember, was married to Gail.  After he killed Maxine and tried to kill Emily, he drove the Platts into the canal in his car and tried to kill them all.

Would Bethany really not know who Maxine was, when Maxine's killer had been married to her gran? Or perhaps Bethany knew only too well and was trying to move the conversation with Craig away from one of her family's dirty secrets?

You can relive all of the Richard Hillman saga with this fab fan book: Norman Bates with a Briefcase

Tracy Shaw reprised the role of the ghost of Maxine Peacock, visiting Norris Cole in a one-off sketch show as part of ITV's Text Santa charity initiative which was broadcast on 21st December 2012. (With thanks to Corriepedia)

The Hillman incident happened when Bethany was small and it's possible that the family made pains not to discuss it in front of her. Bad enough she was traumatized when her step father sedated her and drove the whole family into the canal. I suppose over time, they wouldn't be talking about it as much, hoping to just forget it and Bethany wouldn't have heard much about it over the years as a result.

Was it really 2003? It doesn't seem like that long ago although I do remember David Platt being a little kid at the time.

Bethany trying to keep the family's dirty secrets? A steady stream of very public secrets for the last twenty years. Good luck with that.

I can't believe it has been 14 years already!

I liked Maxine. I remember her being very much in love with Ashley. Do I have this wrong, or did she mostly sleep with the doctor because she was desperate to get pregnant and worried that Ashley was sterile?

Something like that. The doc was very supportive while investigating Maxine and Ashley's possible infertility, and when it looked like he'd found a solution, Maxine was so thrilled that she accidentally had sex with the doc instead of Ashley!

Since Maxine did work at the salon and was close to Audrey,I thin I would've liked Audrey to walk by at that moment to tell Bethany and Craig who Maxine was and why the bench waa dedicated in her memory instead of Bethany almost acting dismissive as though Maxine wasn't important.
