Les Dennis in The Addams Family - A Review

On June 22nd I had the thrill of going to watch The Addams Family on stage in Cornwall. Prior to actually seeing the show I'd heard extremely good things about it so I entered the auditorium with high expectations and I certainly wasn't disappointed. Full of humour, emotion and fantastic songs, I was in high spirits throughout the whole performance and I didn't want it to end.

Featuring Samantha Womack as Morticia and Les Dennis (Corrie’s beloved burglar, Michael Rodwell) as Uncle Fester, the entire cast really brought the traditional Addams Family to life. The show started with a catchy song about being an Addams as we were introduced to all of the familiar characters and I have to say, the character’s individuality from the spooky Wednesday Addams even all the way through to Lurch were captured brilliantly.

The songs were incredibly catchy and really aided in telling the story which centered around Wednesday’s new love interest and how the ‘normal’ Beineke’s got along with the kooky Addams’. The concept of the story was to question what is classed as ‘normal’ and it really got across the message that craziness is celebrated. The comedy was fit for all ages and there was definitely something for everyone.

Les’ Uncle Fester was fantastically hilarious, and I have to admit I was half expecting Phelan to jump out from behind a prop tree! After obviously watching Les tread the Corrie cobbles until his exit last year, it was really interesting for me to see him perform in a completely different capacity and he did a spectacular job. After the show I even met the man himself who very kindly stopped for a photograph and interacted with other fans waiting outside.

The show is touring the UK until November and I sincerely recommend going if you get the chance. Read interviews about The Addams Family with Les Dennis here and Carrie Hope Fletcher here.

Semi - serious role and I was impressed. He did a really long complicated monologue and got a round of applause.
