Many viewers will have watched with interest how the whole Tyrone and Kirsty domestic violence issue is being played out. Once again Coronation Street tackles head-on a difficult, you could say even a taboo, subject. Tyrone played his part brilliantly. He was obviously profoundly shocked by Kirsty's assault.and it was particularly poignant when he spoke of how his mother hit him when he was a child. Kirsty tried to downplay her actions, saying,'You know what I'm like,' to which Tyrone promptly replied, 'I do now.' He also pointed out that if he'd attacked her, he'd be a wife-beater and just because she's a woman doesn't make it right. Absolutely, Tyrone!
Tyrone is one of the contenders for the kindest person ever to appear on the Street. (It would be interesting to hear who other people would put forward for such a title.) That Tyrone is such a good person makes us feel extra protective of him and perhaps even more hostile to Kirsty. True, she is deeply apologetic, but gradually and most intriguingly, the real Kirsty is being revealed. After the truce with Tina, perhaps we believed that things would improve and that Tyrone would be happy, something he thoroughly deserves after the Molly and Kevin affair.
Some fine acting tonight from Maria and Kirsty. Fairly innocent comments though may well come back to bite Maria as she celebrates her birthday and winks at Tyrone, referring to their relationship of many years ago. Kirsty is clocking all this and though she controls herself, her fine acting and subtle facial expressions, reveal that she is struggling and that her apologies to Tyrone will be short-lived. She is a woman on the edge. A brilliant depiction of an individual with a serious personality disorder. Again the Street deals with a psychiatric problem with great bravery.
