Corrie producer Phil Collinson: "Becky's one of the biggest Corrie characters in the last 20 years"

Coronation Street producer Phil Collinson has been interviewed by David Brown of the Radio Times.

Phil talks about Robert Vaughn's arrival as Milton, Nigel Havers returning as charmer Lewis, Katherine Kelly leaving, Antony Cotton returning and Craig Charles taking a break.

Phil rightly heaps praise on actress Katherine Kelly and talks about her leaving.  However, this fan reckons he undermines most of the current Corrie cast when he says: "Becky's been probably one of the biggest characters in the last 20 years on Coronation Street."

Make of the man what you will and watch the interview here.

While Becky was one of my favourite characters, I wouldn't say she was one of the biggest in the last 20 years. She hasn't had the longevity. Steve or Liz McDonald (though a bit over 20 years there), Roy and Hayley, Eileen, Leanne, Fiz, Tyrone, all major players from the past 20. Becky might be one of, but certainly comes after all the above.

Bah humbug! I agree with Tvor; Becky was a good character in the beginning, but in no way was she a "big" character. I think Phil loses objectivity; he is constantly on about the ACTOR rather than the character. He has the same blindness about Stella.

"One" of the best characters he says and yes she has been a strong character, because we will remember her like we remember and will remember Raquel, the Croppers, Fred, the McDonalds (Andy aside), Eileen and Reg

Hindsight's a great help here. It's only when a character goes, you can judge whether they were big. If they leave a gap that can't be filled, then they were big. For the moment, I can only think of the old-timers no longer with us. Aside from Danny Baldwin, thanks to Bradley Walsh's acting and the character being part of a dynasty. Actually, this would make a good poll. Great characters from the last 20 years; or have we done this?

Bring back Danny Baldwin!

Well I'm in the process of doing a poll of top 60 characters from 1960 to the present. I hope you'll find a fair amount of characters from the last 20 years being mentioned as well as from the 60s, 70s and 80s. :)

Becky has barely been off the screen during Collinson's reign,so that presumably makes her one of the biggest characters in the last 20 years, forgetting that for nearly 70% of that time she wasn't even in it.

What about Mavis, mentioned only last week? She was in it for 6 of the last 20 years, just like Becky.

What about Peter Barlow, Leanne, Jack and Vera Duckworth, Curly Watts, Kevin and Sally Webster, Les Battersby, Raquel, Roy and Haley, Eileen, Audrey, Mike Baldwin, Rita and Fred Elliott?

Collinson can only dream about anything he produces being as big as the Free the Weatherfield One story when Deidre went to prison. Oh yes and there's Blanche - forgotten already?

Then there's Gail. Love her or loather her - and Collinson seems to loathe her seeing as she spends most of the time scrubbing loos these days - she's been involved in most of the big stories for the last 20 years. That's a big character.

I like Becky, but I agree with the blog that this comment undermines Corrie actors past and present. It also says a lot about Collinson's view of his own importance and his respect for the Street's history.

Blanche without doubt was the biggest character over the last 20 years and her presence is still missed and could never be replaced. Becky will be forgotton in a matter of weeks or months mark my words. See she reverted to type again yesterday screaming and shouting, stealing Kev's tools and breaking into the doctors surgery. She is a bad seed and poor Danny when things dont go her way.
