The Sun claims that the only other Chinese character on the Street was Mr Wong from the chip shop - but of course they are wrong.
The first Chinese character was Jasmine Choong who turned up in 1969 as Billy Walker's girlfriend. His mother Annie took to her at first but when she found out that Billy was planning to propose, she feigned and breakdown and took to her bed. She told Billy that she was dying begged him to find a more suitable wife.
Her lies were exposed by paying guest, Emily Nugent who told Jasmine that Annie was a fraud and when Billy did ask her to marry him, she turned him down. Before leaving Jasmine told Annie that she had nothing to fear: that there was no way her family would allow her to marry into a bigot's family.
Billy was furious and left, vowing never to return (which of course he did many times over the coming years) and Annie blamed Emily for her son's reaction, throwing her out of the pub to go and live with Elsie Tanner. Annie and Emily eventually made their peace and Emily returned to the pub, much to the relief of Elsie who was growing tired of Emily's moralising about her relationship with bookie, Dave Smith.

It's amazing how often PC statements are made about the Street being behind the times (re: "Manchester has a big Chinatown and it's a crime that Corrie bosses have ignored it for so long") only for the true facts to show that the programme has been there, seen it, done it and has a large collection of t-shirts in its archive! Reminds me of the comments a year or so back about Izzy being the first disabled character which were also shown to be categorically wrong.

I'm glad where PC is going with Coronation Street. A multi-cultural society, it is quite gay-friendly (Minus Tracy Barlow). I just hope the new Chinese character won't be a full on stereotype and start eating noodles everyday. Apart from that, very happy!

Though Xin will work at a Chinese restaraunt, I can't see her being a stereotype, for one she's a college graduate, she sounds an interesting character
hey boys and girls her Grandmother in the show played Jasmine Chong in 1960 :D so she is not the first Chinese Jasmine who was played by Hollywood Actress Lucia Soonge is said to be coming back to corrie. When ITV hired Lucia it was for the 1960 show the prisoner which failed you can said it didn't fail but anything that last ten eps is a fail to me anyhow the prisoner was taken off the air and they had Lucia under contract so the put her in Corrie infact i have a beaufital picture of her on my wall ill post it hear

I don't like Xin,the Chinese character .Her whining and playing a victim as if she's entitled to get a job in her field is annoying and irritating.Can't wait til she's gone!
